Chennai-Mamallapuram-Pondichery, where to next?

Hi, I am planning my first trip to India with my boyfriend this coming December landing in Chennai on the 22nd leaving three weeks later from Kochi back to the UK.

So far we are planning a couple of days in Chennai, two/three days in Pamallapuram, the same in Pondichery. Does anyone has a good suggestions regarding where to go next?

I have earmarked Madurai as a MUST see and everybody tells us we must experience the back waters in Kerala. In a nutshell I would like to do city/ temples/ and a few days on a beach but not keen in Kovalam.

I am very interested in going to Ramanathapuram and further South to the Kumari Amman temple, to the tip of India and Padmanabhapuram palace in Kerala, any advice welcome regarding these destinations. Any other ideas are welcome.

I hope this post is comprehensive enough to generate answers.

Hi,
Check out Sripuram Golden temple in Vellore - its a must see and just 3hrs drive from Chennai.
Madurai - Meenakshi temple
Karaikudi - Chettinad houses
Rameshwaram - a small island in the Gulf of Mannar - third longest corridor in the world (its quiet far off, around 572 km awy from Chennai)
Munnar, Kumarakom, Cochin or some places not to be missed in Kerala.

Well you can head towards Munnar, Kumily or Kodaikanal from Madurai.
