We are arriving at Chennai (Madras) Airport at 11 am. From there, we want to travel to Pondicherry (Puducherry) by public transport.

Using my guidebooks I found out, a possible route should be the following:

1. By local bus from Chennai airport to Moffusil bus station in Chennai.
2. From Moffussil to Pondi by express bus.

I don't think that this is the optimal route, since the airport is 16 km south-east of Chennai. So, first we would have to travel back to Chennai. Is there a better way? Perhaps some express busses to pondi stopping at or near the airport?

Greetings, Mio

Mr N (a Chennai resident of many years...) says you can go to Tambaram. The Pondicherry buses will stop there.

But she says that you will have no guarantee of a seat and might have to stand for the whole 3 or 4 hour journey. To be sure of a seat go to koyambedu, the moffusil bus station. But it is quite a way from the airport!

There are 2 routes to Pondy from Chennai. One is through the scenic coastal (ECR) route and an inland route. The optimal route from the airport is the inland route. Take a suburban train going towards Tambaram. The station is across the airport. The bus station at Tambaram is right next to the train station. Plenty of buses ply between Chennia and Pondy and you should have no problem catching one from Tambaram. Like Nick said, you may not find a seat in the bus at Tambaram. But it is only 3 - 4 hour journey.

But it is only 3 - 4 hour journey.

Probably not a problem ...unless you've just come from ten or more hours on a plane!

Is taking a car definitely not an option? Rs2000-ish should do it... walk outside the airport, get in a car, relax

Hi all!

Are there any bus services from Chennai airport to Pondi overnight? My flight lands in chennai at 10pm, am wondering if its safe to travel as a solo female to Pondi at this time of night or simply sleep at local chennai hotel and travel the next morning.

thanks!

Stay in the Airport Dormitory and take the early morning bus (Say around 6 am or 7 am). There is a bus sstand right opposite to Airport and majority of the buses stops there (Seats not guaranteed)

That's one of the best option.

If you opt for staying @ hotels, there are a few budget hotels which are 2.5 to 3 kms from the airport (Mount Heera, Mount Manor, Hotel Mars) and infact you can take a auto from the first two hotels and reach a main bus atand called Kathipara where all the buses will stop (Seats not guaranteed)

From Hotel Mars, you can walk across to the bus stand called Pallavaram and catch hold of a Pondicherry bus (Seats not guaranteed)

With Warm Regards

There are "N" number of Buses from chennai to Pondy Via ECR Suman.

From 6 am to 7 pm almost once in 15 minutes you have buses in that Circuit. 80% of them are normal buses with 3 + 2 / Non-Reclining seating arranagment with Very very minimal stops in between -- > All these are TSTC [ Government - State Buses]

For comfort, Try SETC[Government-Express Buses]--> Non-Stop from Chennai to Pondicherry .

If you want confirmed Seat, Board from Koyambedu terminus. These buses will pickup folks from Ashok Pillar / Guindy Estate / Madhya Kailash / Thiruvanmiyur also.

Hope this helps

Thanks a Lot.

We will be staying at Thiruvanmiyur. If we board the SETC buses from there in early morning (7.30 AM), Can we get comfirmed seat?
If not, please advice me how can I get to Koyambedu Bus Terminous from Thiruvanmiyur at early morning.

Is there any AC Buses?

Regards

Mostly , you will not get "Seat" if you board at Tiruvanmiyur but again it depends on our luck only. Only problem is , If at all if we don't get seat, mostly we will be standing till Pondicherry is the bothering issue.

Early morning, if you mean 5 am +, you can get MTC bus to Koyambedu Bus terminus.

If you do not mind spending more, you can reserve "rathimeena Travels" online [ They have a bus from chennai to Chidambaram Via Pondicherry starting at Koyambedu at 6 am] and they have boarding point in Thiruvanmiyur. Please be aware , this is 3 times the government bus fare. It's Non A/C , Non-stop with Reclining seats.

A/C buses are not there at early mornings. As far as I know, ther is one A/c Bus from Chennai to Thirunallar [Pondy govt bus] which goes via Pondy at 11:00 am and Rathimeena operates Buses to distant coastal tamilnadu locations Via Pondy but those are post lunch and at nights.

A/C per se is not required for that Circuit as most part of the journey we will be along the coast with Sea Breeze Blowing in once you are out of Thiruvanmiyur until 15 minutes before Pondicherry bus stand.

All the Best
