can we do manali-leh by road in may end/june first week?

friends,
we want to go to leh in the summer... but want to do it eand may, early june.
and we want to go by the manali-leh road.
(will probably return by air to delhi)
will rohtang be open by then?
is there any other road?
which is the best (as in ''breath takingly beutiful') road to leh from manali?

would appreciate your replies. am trying to work and freeze the arrangements.

At this point it's probably too early to say. I flew from Delhi to Leh near the end of last May, and I think the overland route from Manali opened sometime the last week of May. It will, however, depend on how much snow falls this winter and spring, and whether there's a storm late in the year.

There's really only one choice of route, I believe. It's indeed beautiful, at times, and doing the whole thing in the last row of the cheapest class of bus is a decent test of stamina.

With the amount of snow this season I really have my doubts that the road will open up so soon. It' really been snowing quite heavily this year.
