Building an itinerary (south india)

I'm in the process of getting a rough itinerary done (and its not easy!). Since I changed my mind about travelling around with a scooter I will rely on trains an buses mainly. I decided to put my focus on south india for about 10 weeks from mid-january to march starting and finishing in mumbai.

I have put together the following itinerary for the first 4 weeks or so, unsure yet on where to go after that.

Mumbai
Matheran
Mahabaleshwar
Bijapur
Badami
Hampi
---------------
for another 4 to 6 weeks
Kerala - Goa? or Tamil Nadu - Kerala?
----------------

Before I plan further on my itinerary I would appreciate some opinions on how much time I should schedule for this, what places I should maybe add or skip and if there are any transport issues I should know about.

Another question that bugs me (and I couldn't find an answer yet) is about train and bus reservation. Say I wanted to take the train from Hospet to Chennai or Bangalore is it normally necessary to book several days ahead or is some spontaneity possible?

Also, if anyone knows of some good resources (history,...) for the places mentioned above that would be great.

thanks.

It is far too difficult to decide how far in advance to book ahead for trains, it depends on so many different things, but the further ahead you can book, the better.

There is a little bit of info about Hampi in the following thread.

While in Mahabaleshaw, check out the hilltop for of Raigad, not too far away.

Many feel Badami can be skipped

Go to Goa, you get the mother of all LP haunts.
Go to Tamil Nadu, you get something else entirely!

Not with you on that one Bij, Badami should not be missed at least as good as Hampi IMHO

thanks for the info, specially for the hampi-link.

Bijapur and Hampi I definitely want to visit. Badami is more or less on the way so I will probably make a stop there and see for myself if its worth it.
