building an Itinerary including fine art, and vinyl.

Hello, I will be leaving for India Oct.16th and traveling for 6 weeks. My first trip to India, and I'm trying to build an Itinerary that includes the best of Indian contemporary art ie: art schools, museums and galleries. I think I'll fly into Mumbai, and I assume they will have a nice art scene, (any particular areas of town known for the arts?) I have a decent budget for this trip so I can make a few flights, so hopefully no great art city would be left out.

I would like to visit Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and Kolkata and maybe fly south to a city or cities with a great contemporary art scene.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
n_c

I am also very interested in Hindustani classical music, I would love to see performances, and buy records, lots of records.

For contemporary art I think Kolkata is the major place. For Carnatic classical music performances it's Chennai. Great music store in Kolkata on Park Street, not many Carnatic recordings though.

In general I think the idea of contemporary art for India is kind of out of place, which is why you do not get responses here. You have so much "classical" Indian beauty everywhere that modern art cannot catch up with it at all, and seems almost absurd because India itself is a piece of art, of art alive, which you do not find anywhere in the world.

Kolkata, Delhi & Mumbai are the metros where you will have enough exposure to contemporary art. If you are interested in theatres you will be able to catch a few good plays.
Experience the Durga Puja celebration in Kolkata.
