Best Way to travel to Manali - Need urgent advice

Hi Guys,

This is Sriram and I am from Sri Lanka.
Next week my wife and I are planning to travel to Manali for 3 nights/4 days. For the time being our itinerary looks like

25th March – arrive in Delhi (at around 8 pm)
26th Evening – leave to Manali by bus (Volvo??)
27th, 28, 29th – night stay in Manali/Sight seeing
30th Evening – Take the bus from Manali
31st Reach Delhi and depart to Colombo

However I was told that the bus ride from Delhi – Manali is nearly 16 hours... So I tried contacting few travel agents in Delhi for a cab. All of them quoted us more than 10,000 INR for the whole journey (the best quote was 13,000 INR). Do you think it’s reasonable? Or have we been over quoted? Are there any reliable travel agents/drivers you all could recommend?

I would be grateful if you guys could let us know the best way to get to Manali without tiring ourselves too much. If we are travelling by Bus, do you think we will be able to travel to Manali on the 25th Night itself? (Given that we arrive in Delhi at round 8 p.m)

Also we are planning to stay in the YMCA tourist hostel on the 25th night and they charge around 2,750 INR for a night. How’s that place? Are there any other place in Delhi that you could recommend to us..

Looking forward to your replies…

Regards,
RAM

The cab might not help you out much in this case. It will save you a few hours but not substantial enough in my opinion to warrant spending 10,000-12,000 as opposed to the bus cost.

You can catch a bus to Manali that day itself...but assuming you catch it even by 10 PM, you are looking at getting to Manali at approx 2 PM in the afternoon the next day.... which then is your call.

Hi Sidharth,

Many thanks for this..
If buses are leaving at 10 pm, we would definitely like to take that so that we can have an extra day in Manali.

Do you know where I could book tickets for the Delhi - Manali bus? Also the boarding point, so that I can directly proceed there from airport?

The thing is i am not sure how many buses leave for Manali at 10 PM i.e those that you can pre-book.

There's always the option of landing up at ISBT or making combinations such as Delhi-Chandigarh-Manali etc etc which ofcourse i would not suggest that you try, since you are not familiar with India...

....let me look around for a bit more , ill try giving Himachal Bhawan here a buzz as well.

Turn up at the Himachal Bhawan on Janpath on the morning of 26th. and book your seats for the overnight Volvo bus.

yep.....i think thats how you will have to do it...havent been able to find a later departure than 8 PM...like i said i know buses , private, leave at 10PM and even later from ISBT but that would mean on the spot buy and if you are traveling in peak season then there is no guarantee on the ticket availability.

Hi sriramhary and welcome to IM. Just a gentle reminder that as per the terms and conditions for IM multiple posts are not allowed. I've removed the identical thread you posted in the Hirmachal Pradesh forum as this thread is probably the best place to get replies to you questions. Good luck.
