I may be returning to India in June. Mostly business in Hyderabad, but I'll have a few days to travel at the start. Where would you go? I've seen Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra, Hampi, Vizag and Mumble so far. I think Leh is out - not enough time. It needs to be accessible from a major airport.

Maybe the hills north of Delhi? How long does it take to get to Shimla?
Or Calcutta and a day trip or two from there?
Chennai and Mamallapuram?
Or somewhere near Bangalore?

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks

Sunday's New York Times has an interesting feature piece about Calcutta in the Travel section. It's by Somini Sengupta. I've pasted a link below (let's see if this works).

She offers plenty of advice and tips... and be sure to click on the map to see the street locations of places described.

You can take the Kalka Mail which departs Delhi late night & arrive at kalka next day very early in the morning. From Kalaka you have the option of either taking the toy train or a shared cab. The train takes a long time, the cab will take around three & half hours.

Much too far away and therefore out of the question. There's not even a nearby airport, as in Leh.

Also quite far away. I found it interesting but for someone who hasn't been to a hill station, there are nicer places.

As for Shimla: Starting from Delhi, the train takes its time, buses might be faster but I don't know about the quality.

Of the more easily accessible hill stations, you may want to consider Nainital (overnigt to Kathgodam, then taxi or bus to Nainital) or Mussoorie (train to Dehradun, then taxi or bus to M.), or even Dharamsala (train to Pathankot, then taxi or bus to D.). There are also direct buses to these places from Delhi but again, I don't know about the quality.

Thanks everyone.

Anantapur looks like it may be a good visit for a weekend from Hyderabad, thanks!
I think I'll have to leave the hills north of Delhi until I have more time, so it's either Kolkata or Chennai and Chennai will be drier. Maybe I'll visit the city and a few of the temples to the south.

Hal, Outlook Traveller http://traveller.outlookindia.com/bookhome.aspx does weekend break titles from Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai (among others). They tend to cover a much wider region, so including long weekends so to speak. Their Hyderabad title is currently out of stock, but there's a good chance you'll find it on the ground alright (I'm quite sure I saw it in many places). As you will any of their titles if you can't find them abroad.

They do other topical titles, e.g. on hill stations, beaches, whatever.

Recommended.

Hyderabad has the least option among Indian cities for places to go on a weekend(short ot long) break.

After you have done hampi(amazing place) and vizag-araku-bora(nice) there is not much else to do.

Have you been to aurangabad(ajanta-ellora)? It can be done comfortably in 3-4 days from hyderabad. There is a conveniently timed train(I think devgiri express).

But mind you it will be very very hot - about the same as hyderabad.

Mach, I'll look for those books.

Thanks, Theyaamdancer.
I've been to Araaku. Guntapalli might be good for a weekend break.

Nayan,
Ajanta-Ellora is a good idea. Maybe I can land in Mumbai and make my way overland.

Visiting Ajanta & Ellora, I'd certainly try and fit in nearby Daulatabad as well. As Nayan cautions though, would be very hot I think.

Never been to any of them, mind; but it's said to be quite something, and has an amazing history. btw Aurangabad itself some seem to think little of, others seem to quite like it.
