best place to see Holi festival

Hello,

This might lead to links to old threads?

Any recommendations for a place to see the Holi festival.

Not dangerous (it can get out of hand)

Not too hectic (possible?)

Most spiritually significant?

Best dates to see it all ?

Any advice would be appreciated...

Thanks

R

Its not such a big thing in this part of India, but, by all accounts, and previous threads, the safest place to see Holi from is your hotel window.

Boisterous, to say the least.

Anyway, do a search.... you'll find the previous threads.

In fact you don't need to.... Just look at the foot of this page!

It's good fun and reasonably safe on Juhu beach in Mumbai.

I could walk amongst the brightly coloured locals on the beach untouched by colours ..... until I got my mega blaster water gun out - then it was war!

The purple colour is a sod to get out of your hair though.

Apparently the trick is to grease up with moisturiser to avoid a permanent purple face.

But 'spiritual'? I don't think so.

I experienced Holi in Puscar a few years ago. If I remember correctly it wasnt the actual Holi but a second wet Holi that they have a week or so later in Puscar, because it it such a holy place (or something like that). The main difference was that it was supposed to be projectile only and therefore no physical contact is allowed so it was safe to be female and playing. Myself and two other girls participated and had loads of fun, we got totally soaked and where utterly multicoloured. It wasn't a particularly spiritual but it was great fun, I intend to do I again this year, so maybe see you there.

Ohh and yes the pink stuff stains and one of the other girls was bright pink in places for a week or so.

Last year I celebrated Holi in Jaipur and it was great. The day before Holi I went to the Elephant Festival, held in a stadium (can't remember the name, the tourist information centre can tell you all about it). Was there on my own (woman) and perfectly safe (just got one of those odd hand shakes and my face was smeared with colours, green like a reborn Hulk). Holi itself I spent with Indian friends and their families, fun. Just one thing, especially when you're blond: try to keep your hair covered (though that won't be easy). The colours didn't wash off till after 2 months, looked like a 'punk' from the 80's....

Enjoy!
