Smile Best place for buying fabrics?

Hi, I am travelling around Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai and Kerala next year, could anyone give me an idea of the best places to buy authentic fabrics/scarfs/pashminas? Do the cities have best variety, are they more expensive than smaller towns? Will I be charged more as a 'tourist' rather than a local - is there any way to avoid this?!?!

Thanks

Ahmedabad was known as Manchester of India (number of mills), There is a lot available in Gujarat, but you are not visiting this part so nearest big deals are in Mumbai. You will get what you need at most places, but the prices will differ. Learn to haggle before you go there and make sure you have some knowledge of materials.

Surat City in the state of Gujarat, India, is extremely popular for fabrics ...

Khamaghani,
Kind of Fabric you require is available in most of the cities in Rajasthan, Delhi,Mumbai and kerala. The Most choice of Travellers. Prices can be reduced by bargaining, not turing up at shops with, Touts,Guides,Taxi Drivers no matter how friendly he is and Bargaining. Pushkar is a shoppers paradise, you will have shopping fever on your first day. almost everyone is selling the same thing so Bargain as much as possible. Ready Made cloth Material is very good in pushkar . If you are into expencive fabrics etc please research a little bit because here pashmina is usualy tested if put through a small ring, but nowdays many sorts of Fabric is put through a ring and sold as pashmina. Becarefull of these little scams.

I guess that, these days, most of the specialist local fabrics are available in most of the cities.

Whilst it would be 1,000% different experience for me to go to small villages in Kashmir, I can certainly visit my local shops here to buy shawls etc.

The saris and silks from the bigger shops, and from the government and state emporia, will be fixed price. There is no point in trying to bargain, they will not even begin to listen to you --- unless you are buying in really big quantities.

In the small shops you can.

Just buy stuff that you are happy to own at prices you are happy to pay, and don't look back! They are professional dealers; you are not a professional shopper. If you think you have got a really good bargain, that was probably part of the skill of the seller ! Good for him for making his customer even happier

Happy shopping
