Dear All,

This is one awesome forum I have come across and this is my first post in IM
Am planning to travel with my family (wife & 9 month old kid)from Bangalore to Coorg as of 09-Dec for 3 days on my Santro. This is my first trip to Coorg known as the Scotland of India. Cant give it a miss now
1)Request you to please let me know on the road conditions from Kushalnagar to Suntikoppa? Came to know that from Srirangapatna to Kushalnagar the roads are pretty much good.
2) Would there be a fog issues in Coorg during the time of Dec wherein driving a car will be tough?
3) Guys, can you please let me know which are the must see places in Coorg. I know some places like Tibetan Monastery, Raja's seat, Iruppu Falls, Omkarewshara temple. Are there any other must see places that I shouldn't avoid? My plan is not to utilise the time visiting as many places as possible but to have a relaxed stay in the place enjoying it at a slow pace.
4) Planning to book a to Homestay called Vindhyas at Suntikoppa.. They charge 2500/- per day inclusive of breakfast. Pls let me know if any of you have stayed there and got any feedback about them? It would be great if you guys can suggest any other better options.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

My comments inline.

1)Request you to please let me know on the road conditions from Kushalnagar to Suntikoppa? Came to know that from Srirangapatna to Kushalnagar the roads are pretty much good.

Kushalnagara to Suntikoppa ,Road will be Average to poor.
Suntikoppa to Madikeri is actually Ghat road but you won't feel you are climbing up and road will be Average .
After Suntikoppa, There will be big pitfalls in both sides of the road and hence if you see a bigger vehicle in opposite direction , better to stop and go as , Getting down the road at few places in Santro is not advisable.

2) Would there be a fog issues in Coorg during the time of Dec wherein driving a car will be tough?

No.

To add on to your list, if you have time include Talacauvery [ For it's extreme scenery and for it's Religious importance] [ 42 kms from Madikeri in Winding roads]

4) Planning to book a to Homestay called Vindhyas at Suntikoppa..

My take is, Plan a stay in madikeri as Suntikoppa is almost in plains only . In Madikeri, you can plan to stay at Hotel Mayura Valleyview [ Karnataka Government Hotel] and it's 1200 Rs / Night and it's nice and good and the location is fantastic.

Hope this helps. If you need more info, Please post.

Please note that Bangalore to Coorg is around 250kms. And you are travelling with a 9 month old. With 3 days, you will be always on the road and it will not be fun.

It would be better if you can plan for 4 days so that you have two clean days to do your sightseeing et al. And will give some time for the very small one to recoup and recover.

Thanks a lot pmvelu and ribhu95 for your suggestions.

pmvelu, as mentioned I will have a look into hotel Mayura Valley View. My impression was even Suntikoppa was somewhere on the hills. Is this rental of 1200/- per night is for a room (double occupancy basis) or per person as I have seen that most homestays charge per night per person?

Ribhu95, my trip is planned for 3 nights and 4 days. Plan is to start early morning 5.30AM from Bangalore on Wednesday. Spend Wednesday (second half), Thursday, Friday and start to Bangalore as of Saturday noon.
Do you still feel I need add one more day here?

Thanks in advance

@Prasath,

Suntikoppa is almost like "Adivara" for Madikeri. 1200 Rs is for the room as a whole in Hotel Mayura Valley view.

Hope this helps

Hi Velu, Our plan is to have an experience of homestay.
Not that am not opting Mayura Valley View, probably during my second visit I will definitely try that.

Currently we have shortlisted 2 homestays, one is Silver Oaks (48 KMs from Madikeri, located at Kunda, Near Ponnampet) and another one being Forest Flower (located at Nani Estate, Horoor Post,Sunticoppa). Both display good rooms, facilities and surroundings on their website. Do you have any feedback about these homestays?

No Prashanth . I do not have any personal experience of those 2 homestays.

If you are first timer to Coorg, One Suggestion from my end.

Few of the plantation Stays / Home Stays in coorg will be too deep into Plantations and might bring in Fear-Factor.

Infact , there are "N" number of Home stays / Plantation Stays in coorg and hence I would suggest you directly visit and can just book it rather than Advance booking !

Have a Fantastic Trip.

These two should be in your stated price range. I didnt stay in either, but they are on my list for next time in the beautiful Coorg area:

Anothe is Mina's Nest Homestay, along the river. It looked lovely. It is right near Orange County Hotel, which is lovely for wanderig about, and has a great coffee cafe.

Thanks Velu, will keep your suggestion in mind.

Rebecca, Coorgkarishma pics and facilities look pretty good as per their website. Thanks for the suggestion. This is located near Murnad district around 25 Kms from Madikeri. I will check with them for the rental and facilities.

i forgot tosay previously--we were there in December 2008 for three days--not a bit of fog, ven earlyy in the mroning. Delightful crisp cool temp at night--need a light sweater perhaps.

Other place to visit, on way to Byelukuppe(Tibetan village and temple) is at Dubare . You take a boat short way across the river where elephants are kept. Your little boy might be wide-eyed at the ele[phants--a new creature in his life! However, we thought the poor elephants didnt look too happy. They are bathed in the river there and sometimes you can help, if desired.

Have you seen the website that lists many (not all) of the Coorg homestays by area? You've probably already found it in your research, but in case not...

http://www.homestaykodagu.com/home_stay.html

On IM, there are reviews homestays in Coorg.

Rebecca, we have almost decided on "the Silver Oaks" at Ponnampet, near Gonikoppal. Their website is http://www.thesilveroaks.com/ . they charge 2500/day.. Only thing is its little bit far from Madikeri around 45 Kms.. All together there are some good reviews about this homestay..
I have already gone through the homestaykodagu.com .. I got this pretty early via a google search.

Good to know that climate in Dec is pleasant. Looking forward for the trip now ..
