Hi,

As you already booked all the tickets, I don't want to discourage BUT it's just plain too much for the trip.

1) At the minimal cut short Kodaikanal as almost ooty and kodaikanal are almost look alike (in weather, greenery, view points)

2) Kodaikanal to Rameswaram by car might be bit too costly. Try to get upto madurai from kodaikanal by bus (Buses are frequent) and from madurai board a passenger train until rameswaram

3) Try to spend one more day in mysore or cutshort 30% of places in mysore to experience and enjoy !

4) Also last week of april & May are the MOST CROWDED season in both ooty and kodaikanal during which accomodation costs become 1.5 times and also expect mad rush at all tourist spots. Please be prepared.
Hope this helps. If you need more info, please post.

Regards
Velu

Hi - just to say I completely agree with Velu about Mysore - you couldn't possibly do all that in one day.

I did most of that - I didn't go to Brindavan or St Philomena's but I did go to Somnathpur. I did do it very leisurely but I took 4 days.

I'd say add an extra day and still cut some places out.

Oh, and if you can, try to arrive on a Sunday so you can see the Palace lit up.

Thanks a lot Velu for your quick response and for usefull informations.

As I got Ooty toy train ticket on Day 5 and I have to reach Ooty by Day 4, so I have only one day for mysore. So could you please let me know if I have to cut some places of Mysore, which places I should visit and which are to ommit? Also the order of journey for those places and is cab is available there for whole day? What is the current for cab?

Again can I visit all places of Kodaikanal as mentioned in my earlier post?
If not then which are the places of Kodaikanal we can visit.

What are the cab rates for Kodaikanal tour and Kodaikanal to Rameshwaram tour? Actually for my child I want to have cab travel instead of break journey.

Thanks,
kkgcom.

Nice to know you found our posts useful kkgcom.

Mysore Part:-

In Mysore, there are numerous packages offered by both KSTDC (Karnataka Government tourism deparment) as well as private operators. Once you are at Mysore, go to "Mayura Hoysala" (Hotel of Karnataka government) and select a one day tour from them .It's close to Rs. 200 / person and you can see most of the places you are interested on a day (Except KAranji Park and Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary all others are covered ) but it's 8 am to 8 pm non stop sight seeing with a 45 minutes lunch break.

If you can hire a taxi(Not sure on the taxi rates ) for the day, do it in the following order:-

Start for sightseeing by 6:30 am.

Head straight to Shrirangapatna (Just 12 kms from Mysore) and cover all the tourist places of Shrirangapatna by 11 am ( Must Visits are Ranganatha swamy temple(For religious reasons as this temple is most sacred than a architectural marvel), Tippus summer palace, Daria Daulat, Gol Gumbaaz , Sangama (Confulence of three rivers) --> Make all of this visits bit fast as the limelight and best-in-class place of shrirangapatna is "Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary" . It's around 7 kms from Shrirangapatna. Boating in "Crocodile infested waters" to see the Migratory birds and a well maintained forest department park !

Cover Mysore tourist places (In the same order Philomina's church **** LUNCH **** Mysore palace- Zoo . Now you will be really tired as palace need close to 1.5 hours and Zoo needs at the minimum 1 hour to explore). Head to Karanji park (Just 1 km from zoo) and head to the boating area . Also visit the "Aviary" [ Peacock and other colourfull birds will be an enclosure and we can walk into the enclosure and observe it ]. DO NOT TRY TO VISIT BUTTERFLY PARK as it need considerable walking of close to 5 kms (to & fro from this Lake).

Get to Chamundi Hills and finish your darshan before 5:30 pm (6:30 to 7:30 temple is closed) which wil result in long Queues from 7:30pm onwards. After Darshan walk around the temple and you can see the Mysore city from here .

Head to KRs/ Brindavan Gardens (Which will be around 25 kms from Chamundi hills). Experience the beauty of the gardens and the Dancing fountains and get back when the park is closed (Normal days until 7:30 pm and on Sat/ Sun until 8:30pm).

A Long Day I agree but this it's worth the effort !.

On Kodaikanal Part:-

Visit the Kodaikanal Lake, Cocker’s Walk, Golf Links, Green Valley View, Pillar Rocks, Silver Cascade Falls, Bear Shola Falls etc.

These are standard tourist spots.Probably you may stop with this. If you have one more day, you can make the remaining places for Day 2.

On Rameswaram Part:-

I am not sure on the Taxi fare as I never used taxi . But normally it's 6 Rs/ Km (to & fro charges we have to pay) but in Hill stations , they have fixed package kind of rate which will not match with this standard 6 Rs/ Km rate. Just now back from ooty and out of curiosity, I noticed "Tourist Taxi" Fareboard and to my surprise , it read 4000 Rs For Mysore (For Drop) . Mysore is just 110 kms from ooty (In short cut) and If we use the standard rate, it should be 1200 Rs ONLY (But ofcourse Inter-state Tax is there but still ...). Just plan accordingly.

In Rameswaram, Try visiting "Dhanuskodi" too which will be interesting with ruined post office, Railway Station etc. (it's 18 kms from Rameswaram temple and you can do it in city bus itself Or you can hire Auto ) . Dhanuskodi town was washed out due to "Tsunami or Kind of" in 1969 and now it has few ruined places.

Hope this helps. if you need more info, please post !

Thanks Velu again for these detail information. Really For Mysore and Kodaikanal you have helped me a lot to plan our journey appropriately.

Now I need some help for Ooty tour.

For Day 4,5 & 6 is it feasible to achieve the following?

Day 04 : Mysore to Ooty. Early morning after breakfast, proceed to Ooty Station enroute visit Bandipur Wild Life Sanctuary and Fresh tea gardens. Arrive at Ooty Hotel and check-in at the hotel.
Enjoy the nature at Doddabetta in the evening. Visit Botanical Garden and Shopping at night. Stay at Ooty.

Day 05 : Early morning depart after breakfast visiting Film shooting points/Ooty Lake.
Take the toy train from UAM (Ooty) to MTP at 2 PM. Return to Ooty and overnight stay at Ooty.

Day 06 : Ooty to Kodaikanal. Early morning depart after breakfast to look from close quarter the Tea Gardens, Sim’s Park, Dolphin’s Nose.
Arrive at Kodaikanal via Palani.
Night @Kodaikanal.

Thanks,
kkgcom.

Safari timings in Bandipur NP is 6 - 9 am and 4 - 6 pm !. You need to hire a Car from mysore if you want to do a safari in Bandipur NP.

First bus from Mysore to Ooty bus is at 5:50 am (Tamilnadu government bus with No push back) and it will take close to 2 hours to reach Bandipur NP (Bandipur NP is 70 kms from mysore).

If you can hire a car and start by 6 am from mysore, you can do Safari in BAndipur NP followed by a short stop at "Teppakadu elephant Camp" ( 250 metres from Mudumalai NP) and is just on the way to Ooty !

Safari at Bandipur will last for 1 Hour 15 minutes.

To give you an idea. Mysore to ooty (By Cab) is around 110 kms and Mysore to ooty (by Bus) is 160 Kms. Mysore-Bandipur NP(70kms) - Mudumalai(80kms)-Ooty (By Cab - 110 kms Or By Bus - 160 Kms).Based on your comfort , Plan the trip.

If you really want to travel few 10s of Kms viewing Tea Plantations, ooty to Kottagiri (29kms) is almost having 15 kms of Tea Plantations.

Doddabetta can be visited upto 5:30 pm . There is one "Tea Factory" which welcome Visitors (It's 7 kms before just on Doddabetta Road and there you can see Tea processing + View of Ooty is Good from this place) and also entrance fee is just 5 Rs / person and they will give super-good 1/2 cup tea as compliment.Only Market place of Ooty is "Charring Cross / Commercial Street" ( The Stretch from Charring Cross to ooty bus stand is close 1.5 kms and this is the
main shopping area). "Home Made chocolates" is most famous in ooty and you can buy some. Authentic Tea / Eucalyptus Oil can be bought from Doddabetta "Forest Department Sales counter" just in Doddabetta itself.

Try out Food in "Hotel ooty Saravanas" ( Just in the commercial Street} for best-in-class Vegetarian Food and "Hotel Patel" (Diagonally opposite to Saravanas for Rajasthani / Gujrati /Bengali Food) . If you are Non-Veg, try out "Hotel Hyderabad Biriyani house" (10 steps down the slope from Hotel patel ) .

With all this info, Chart out a plan and do the visits as per your comfort !.

Again for planning, this would be useful.(Read ooty as ooty bus stand)

Ooty to Doddabetta Peak is 12 kms
ooty to Lake is 1.5 kms
ooty to Botanical Garden is 2 kms
ooty to charring cross Junction is 1.5 kms
Ooty to Rose Garden is close to 2kms.

Day 05 : Early morning depart after breakfast visiting Film shooting points/Ooty Lake.
Take the toy train from UAM (Ooty) to MTP at 2 PM. Return to Ooty and overnight stay at Ooty.

Very Much possible EXCEPT that do not get back to ooty as ooty-Mettupalaiyam-Kodaikanal is the route you are going to take and hence backtracking again back to Hills is not advisable.Continue to palani and have a night stay and get first bus on next day morning to Kodaikanal (57 kms)

Day 06 : Ooty to Kodaikanal. Early morning depart after breakfast to look from close quarter the Tea Gardens, Sim’s Park, Dolphin’s Nose.
Arrive at Kodaikanal via Palani.
Night @Kodaikanal.

You are mentioning about the tourist spots of Coonoor which is close to 20 kms from ooty (Enroute mettupalaiyam). On Day 5. Post lumch finish all the coonoor tourist spots, get back to ooty and retire for the day.

FYI, There are standard one day packages from ooty covering all the tourist spots of ooty. same is true for Coonoor too(From Ooty). Avail any of these packages for Budget and you can see all with a bit of rushing.

On Day 6, catch 2pm train to mettupalaiyam and proceed towards palani.

Hope this helps. If you need more info, Please post.

Happy Planning !!

Great informations!!! Thanks again Velu. No doubt it seems that you have made my journey plan a smoother one.

On day 4 after visiting the Bandipur in the morning slot, I think we can reach Ooty hotel by 12 PM and then after taking rest for 2-3 hours we can proceed to Doddabetta. Is it feasible to complete Doddabetta by 5:30 PM?

On day 5, I have already booked toy train tickets. Train will depart at 2PM from ooty. Now on that morning is it possible to visit Coonoor and then catch the train? Then I will shift the visiting of Ooty shooting point and Lake to previous day?

Thanks,
KKGCOM.

Very much possible and feasible. From Bandipur , ooty can be reached in maximum 1 1/2 hours (In Short cut road). Yes you can cover Doddabetta too on the same day .

On day 5, I have already booked toy train tickets. Train will depart at 2PM from ooty. Now on that morning is it possible to visit Coonoor and then catch the train? Then I will shift the visiting of Ooty shooting point and Lake to previous day?

Yes coonoor's tourist spots can be covered in maximum 3 hours Flat . If possible as soon as you reach ooty, go to ooty railway station (it's just opposite to ooty bus stand) and meet station master and try out changing the boarding station to "Coonoor". [As per Railway rules , this is possible].This way, you can vacate the lodge, cover all the tourist places of coonoor and board mettupalaiyam train from coonoor itself .
This will save you close to 45 minutes ! FYI, Ooty-Coonoor-Mettupalaiyam is the route the toy train takes and coonoor-mettupalaiyam is the best to experience rather than ooty -coonoor. So you are not missing anything by this change.

Have a Fantastic and Safe trip ahead.

Cheers

Thanks velu.

I want to avoid 2 days long train journey from Dindigul to Howrah.
So if I book flight from Chennai on day 9 evening for Kolkata, is it feasible to reach Chennai from Kodaikanal by evening?
Again on day 8 after visiting rameshwaram, we can proceed towards trichy and stay night over there and on the next day afternoon proceed towards Chennai airpot. Is it feasible?
What is your opinion? Please also suggest any alternatives?

Kodaikanal - Chennai Part: -

Kodaikanal to Chennai will take close to 10 hours by Bus (But Only overnight buses are available).

If you want to start from kodaikanal in day time and reach airport by evening, try to board Train #12636 Dep: Dindugal 7:30 am Arr: Tambaram 13:45 Hrs. [ From Kodaikanal, dindugal is approximately 90 kms and in cab you can do it in 2 hours and bus may take close to 2.5 hours] .From Tambaram , Chennai Airport is around 10 kms. You may get right from Public Bus / Auto / Cab for this stretch.

Rameswaram - Chennai Via Trichy Part :-

Rameswaram to Trichy by bus will be very uncomfortable (Roads are good but Buses normally crawl in that Circuit) and it will take close to 6 hours even though the distance is around 225 kms only. Yes you can do a stay at Trichy for night and catch any of the day time trains or Buses (There are buses almost 10 minutes once between Trichy and chennai in day time ) and it will take close to 5 hours and if it's by bus you can get down just in front of Chennai Airport itself . KPN Travels is one of the best and they do have day services (Including Volvo A/c).

Happy Planning.

Thanks a lot Velu for your valuable informations.

I have booked hotel in the following manner.
2 Nights @Mysore Hoysala (KSTDC), 1 Night@Ooty(TTDC), 1 Night@Coimbatore(TTDC) (MTP to Coimbatore), 1 Night@Kodaikanal(TTDC), 2 Night@Madurai(TTDC)(as both Kodaikanal and Rameshwaram are 4 Hours distance from Madurai).

Now my main concern is about the weather.
I have 2 years old of child with me. What will be the temparature of Ooty and Kodaikanal? Based on that I will take that much amount of Woolen clothes.

Thanks,
kkgcom.

I have now two more queries:

1. Is the bangalore bus stand (Majestic/Kempegowda) is just opposite of Yesvantpur Jn? I have booked tickets for Duronto Express and after departing from Howrah, I think there are no other stoppages upto last station Yesvantpur, correct? Are there any other stoppages between Howrah and Yesvantpur? Please clarify my doubts.

2. What are the things we can buy for Mysore, Ooty & Kodaikanal for our parents, relatives and ourselves also?

Thanks,
kkgcom.

1) From Yeswanthpur Jn , Kempagowda bus stand / Bangalore City Jn is close to 7 kms. There are many a buses and taxi would cost you close to 150 Rs.

2) In Mysore you may buy Silk Sarees . The place where you stay at mysore itself has Authentic Silk Sarees (KSIC showroom in the campus itself). In Ooty as I mentioned already, Home made chocolates, Eucalyptus oil and Tea is famous. In Kodaikanal Nothing specific I can think of !
