Auli, Shimla, Mussorie, or Nainital - Jan 29th to 10th Feb - 2010

Hi.

Greetings from Mumbai – India.

I am a resident of Mumbai and wish to take a short break from my daily work routine schedule and head to northern India ideally the Himalayas to experience fresh snow and snowfalls surrounded by huge snow covered mountain peaks, pine forests etc…during the month of Jan-Feb – 2010, I am interested in places which are less modernized and quieter away from maddening crowd and busy schedules.

I shall undertake the abovesaid winter tour between 29 Jan-2010 and 10th Feb – 2010, I shall travel by train from Mumbai and use cheap, local mode of transportation wherever applicable.

Please advice on the following:

1. Which would be ideal place to visit i.e Shimla,
Mussorie, Nainital or Auli during the said period.

2. Any other suggestions or tour itinerary would be much
appreciated.

3. I just need locations which are not very touristic and
has fresh snow fall during the abovementioned period.

Waiting for your valuable feedback…

Thanks in advance,

Thanks Ribhu for your good choice .. Auli,

Please can you further advice me on the travel route to Auli from Mumbai, I intend to take the Bandra DehraDun Train and alight at Haridwar, spent a day in Haridwar, next day travel to Joshimath, spent a day in Joshimath and move on the next day to Auli, I guess there are no accomodation in Auli, so would prefer a days trip to Auli and back to Joshimath... Please advice if this is advisable...

Thanks in advance.

@chris, Auli may be the best option. you will find snow for sure.
if you are single then from rishikesh you try to get shared jeeps.
they will drop you at joshimath.
from joshi math you can go to auli in cable car.
at auli there are 2 staying options
1> GMVN (dormitory available@250/bed)
2> Club mahindra (bit expensive)

Hi Tilak2909,

Thanks for the info and now I have decided to go to Auli

Please advice if the below mentioned itinerary is advisable.

01.02.2010 = Reach Haridwar by train from Mumbai.
02.02.2010 = Spent the day in sightseeing of Haridwar
03.02.2010 = Leave for Joshimath early morning and stay
overnight.
04.02.2010 = Leave for Auli early morning via cable car and
spent the day.
05.02.2010 = If affordable spent another day at Auli.
06.02.2010 = Get back to Joshimath - Spent a day...
07.02.2010 = Get back to Haridwar and finally to Mumbai.

I hope it normally snows during February in Auli, Do you have any other advice related to the above mentioned itineary or maybe include some other places worth-seeing on the route....??

Thanks in advance...

Chris, there are 3 stay option now in Auli - but the time you are going is busy time, skiing time so book in advance - you have GMVN, Cliff Top Resort and another camp-site.

There are few option a little down from Auli too - cottages, where you can stay away from bustle - mid-way between joshimath and auli.

gud idea to spend a day a joshimath and do sightseeing - narsinh temple, the shankaracharya math etc.
