April 2009 flying into Delhi and out of Mumbai. Where to go in the 3 weeks in between

Hi there

I a making my first trip to India and am extremely excited and just a little bit nervous! I have done a bit of travelling before in Europe and the Pacific Islands and Australia and will be travelling through SE Asia for 3 months alone before arriving in India.

I get into Delhi in late March and I have a flexible flight booked out of Mumbai in mid April. I would really love some suggestions on what to do for the 2/3 weeks in between Delhi and Mumbai. I am planning on spending a couple of days in each city but I am not a huge fan of busy cityscape - I am more of a beaches and mountains kind of girl. I was thinking of travelling to Goa but have been a little put off by some of the posts about the nightlife - I am not travelling to party and drink all the time, I can do that at home!

Any advice/hints on great places to visit in that time would be appreciated. I am travelling on what I guess is a medium budget - about US$40 a day and I have also budgeted US$500 for internal flights/trains etc. Obviously I would be happy to come in under budget too!

Thanking you in advance

Hey Amaline...congratulations on your decision to travel to India. I am sure you will not regret it. 20 days will not be much time to travel in India but I guess you need to do the best you can.

Just a few pointers:
Weather in India during 20 March-20 April will be a bit hot so choose your destinations carefully.
Try to avoid spending too much time in travel.
Since you are not big of cities and nightlife, choose quiet and some scenic places.
Since you said you like beaches and hills. I would recommend that you spend few days in Goa before you leave from Mumbai. There are some really nice beaches and you will love it.

Ok..now few ideas:
Delhi - 2 days and one night
Delhi to Kausani by overnight train - spend 4 days in Kausani and Binsar
Delhi-Agra - 2 days and one night in Agra
Agra-Jaipur - 2 nights and one day in Jaipur
Jaipur to Udaipur - Take the flight/train - Spend 2 days in Udaipur
Udaipur to Goa - take a flight...spend 4 days in Goa
Goa to Mumbai - take overnight train or bus...spend a day or two before you leave Mumbai.

Let me know what you think of this plan. I am sure other fellow IM members will give you good ideas too.

Stay well.

Harsha

Hi Harsha

Thanks for your reply - much appreciated I should have mentioned that I am actually doing an organised tour from Katmandhu to Delhi and will be passing through Varanasi and Agra on the way to Delhi. So I might skip Agra but the rest of your suggestion sounds good I will defintitely look into it!

Thanks that would be great! I get to Delhi in late March so I shall look you up then. I have done a bit of research on your suggested itinerary and Kausani looks amazing I will definitely go there. Jaipur and Udapiur look great also. Many thanks - it is great to have a personal recomendation and I never would have thought of those places otherwise.

Hey Amaline....good to see your reply. Please do give me a heads up and would love to meet up with you when you are around. Kausani is amazing and I spent 2 days there in 2006 and I loved it. I am actually looking forward to visit it again. Binsar is also amazing place. There is a forest guest house inside the national park and its so peaceful. They also organize hikes and day trips to nearby places. I will give you all the details in due course. There is still plenty of time and right now I am stuffed with work at my law firm. going through the monday morning blues

Hi Amaline,

Since you have set your heart to visit kausani and Binsar how abt going to a nice jungle birding lodge at Pangot? Its just 15-20 kms from Nainital and there are two nice jungle lodges there..very quiet n serene place..I was there for a few days this summer with my friend and we had a blast.away from the maddening crowds of the cities ..It is also safe and you could enjoy the bird watching n Nature walks.

Hey Amaline, i see you have your Itinerary sorted out...hm, i dun know but i would suggest you to visit some places like rishikesh. Basically it would be the start of summer, i know you'll like to get the tan when u are in India but if you visit some mountains you might aswell get a break from scorching heat.

And i think you rather not spend a hell lotta time in Goa, whats the fun enjoying the same sorta culture (western) when you are in India... Whats the fun in not feeling the inherent culture !

Been reading the posts here. Kausani and Binsar are nice, but for a first timer in India I think they are not a good choice. A first timer friend visited Kausani in August and was completely out of sync with the place she didn't like it at all even though she had nothing to complain about the view. Her complain mainly had to do with the fact that it was sleepy and I agree.
It would be better if you get your first feel of India in places that are more vibrant than sleepy old Kausani. The view of Nandadevi is spectacular but as a friend who spent some time there last year put it that is about all that Kausani has.
Rishikesh is a good choice and there are other places in the Himalayas that you should check out too before setting your heart on Kausani.
Binsar is beautiful but again wouldn't recommend it to a person who has never been to India before.

Yes, as i said there are other places too but Rishikesh is the best option when you have your work cut out...
