From Alleppey - wanting to do a 24hr backwater cruise plus spend 2 nights at Periyar Sanctuary before moving onto Cochin. Would it be better to go to Periyar first and then do the cruise - would that make us any closer to Cochin? On the map Periyar and Allepey seem the same distance to Cochin. Confused

Why not take the cruise from Allepey and leave the boat at eg Kottayam. That would be closer to Periyar, being on the right side of the Vembanad lake.

Alleppey to Cochin is about an hour by bus. (there is a more or less constant supply of buses, but depending on the time of day it can be very difficult to get a seat since the buses arrive full.)
Periyar (Thekaddy) to Cochin is about 4 hours by bus, via Kottayam.

Allepey to Cochin

You can get a car and driver to take you from Allepey to Cochin for Rs600/-. The trip takes about two hours.

Agree with Nick-H: take the cruise starting from Alleppey and end up in Kottayam. The best cruise is to go south from Alleppey towards Quilon (Kollam). I thought it was more scenic because you go down canals that are narrower, and therefore see more rural life up close.
Don't go for a night out on the lake only, or a trip that goes only around the lake...again, there is more to see on the canals.
We hired a car/driver who picked us up in Cochin and dropped us off at our boat in Alleppey, then was there waiting for us when our boat come into Kottayam. From Kottayam, it took 3 hours to get to Periyar. I believe the car ride back to Cochin is around 4 hours.
What is your starting point?

Whichever way you go, you are not too far from any of these places. It's only a question of saving a couple of hours here and there, but the bus/train rides also is interesting,....esp the Cochin- Alleppy route. Green green and green paddy fields with a lot of water bodies and thin canals dotted all arround.
