Allahabad- Has any one heard of this place?

Hi,

Started from Chandigarh on the 26th by car and after staying a night at Agra and playing a round of Golf reached Allahabad on the 28th. Apart from a McDonald here I have not found anything interesting. So I am asking, rather pleading for some suggestions as to what I can do in this area.

Fact 1: Can travel for 4 days at a stretch and be out of Allahabad
Fact 2: Need to be in Allahabad for 4 days too so need to do something during the day.
Fact 3: Travelling alone
Fact 4: Can travel away from here after the 15th of May for 20 days and then need to get back to Chandigarh my home town.
Fact 5: Have own conveyance an Endeavour Ford

Thanks in advance
Karan

Allahabad is an interesting city to walk around or explore on a bike, very green and lots of colonial buildings, particularly old houses and churches. Tourist attractions are Nehru's houses and the Sangam, and maybe the university. Check out the Katra market for clothing and a general bazaar effect, better to go by cycle rickshaw. Kamadhenu Sweets in Civil Lines is famous for sweets. El Chico restaurant in Civil lines has great food, slightly on the expensive side. For south Indian ad Chinese food, check out Tamarind Tree. It is not an exciting town, but it is laid back and has great ambience.

You could also drive to the Buddhist ruins at Kaushambi. On the 4 days, you could go to Varanasi. Another possible trip is Khajuraho and Chitrakoot. Driving in the day-time would be safer, crime rates are rather high in UP.

When I was there I went with a boat on the river. They took me to where the Ganges meets the Yamuna river. They do ceremonies there inside the small boats. Shaving their heads bold, and throwing flowers in the water. I remember whirlpools too.

Thanks will do as suggested, did go to Sangam but there was not much activity there, was dry and one could virtually go from one bank to the other bank by car on the Ganges side.

Took some interesting photographs of shaved heads of kids and some ascetics.

The vidhan sabha I saw at night, was very impressive.

Thanks for taking time to sharing your views and I will be acting on them. It seems you have stayed here, have you?

I will definately check the eating joints as I am a foodie of sorts and love to eat out. As I am staying in Civil lines these places should be near.

Does anyone know if there is a Golf course here in Allahabad and if yes where it is.

Thanks
Karan

Yes, I've stayed there. No Golf course as far as I know. If you walk down the road from Tamarind Tree, there is an interesting church building, Allahabad was the centre of missionary activity during the British days. The Bishop's house is also interesting, architecture wise, as is the university, one of the oldest in the country, and once considered the "Oxford of the East". In a state of dilapidation these days, though. Allahabad was once a high-culture town, with lots of poets and thinkers, including Amitabh Bacchan's father. If you are into Bollywood, you could go gawk at the Bacchan home , not sure where it is.

Dear,
Golf is the best way to find sanity in a new town one is not familiar with, I was lucky to play in agra and met some real nice people there on the course and guess what, here too in Allahabad I came across an army golf course and met a col who told me about AH Wheeler and his amazing bookstore here and the carpet industry that is exporeting carpets world over and also offered to take me inside the fort at Sangam. So believe me it is paradise to play golf amongst partridges, peacocks and deers, in lush green surroundings. So give me Golf and people anytime.... Next stop where is the question......
