Ahmedabad to Calcutta to Darjeeling to Varanasi to Ahmedabad

Hi. Big fan of this IndiaMike. I searched but for the first time could not find an answer to my problem. So decided to register and post.

Subject says it all. I have a very complicated itinerary to work out. I'll be travelling to Calcutta on the 23rd of November. Will take the overnight train to New Jalpaiguri on the 24th. Flights/trains upto this point have been booked.

After that I want to be in Varanasi on the 28th, spend the 28th night and 29th day there and then be back in Ahmedabad on the 30th. I'm finding it near impossible to plan this part unless I take really expensive flights or really complicated train routes (let alone availability issues).

Does anyone have a solution to my problem?

you've put in too little time varanasi onwards. you hit new jalpaiguri 25th morning, and then to head to varanasi your best bet is to take a train back from there to kolkata, then catch on of the many daily trains to varanasi from there, as these will be mail/express.

if you hit varanasi 28th morning, you could take off on a midday train to mumbai on the 29th. then take an overnight train to ahmedabad from mumbai, reaching there 1st morning. if you have to be back in ahmedabad on the 30th, you just need to leave varanasi somewhat earlier. you could check about direct trains, but i'm pretty sure trains to mumbai will be quicker, and i definitely know that the overnight mumbai-ahmedabad train is quick, and a good option since you get a night's sleep without losing time travelling.
