Advise to backpack to Nagaland without tour/guide.. possible?
hi,
This is my second trip to India, and this time i plan to travel for 4-6 weeks starting dec 2008 covering northeast regions (Kolkata, sikkim, Assam with nagaland in plan). was wondering if there any possbilities to do self-tour to nagaland, if i am planning to fly to Dimapur from Kolkata. Thru my research, it may be possible to get instant 'restriced permit' at dimapur airport; or alternatively will it be easier/faster to apply at the the nagaland's embassy at their kolkata office? Or i need to book a tour with a tour operator to travel around nagaland? However, i have constraint with budget as such tour can easily cost up to US$1k for a week. any advise is welcome. |

It is better to get the permit from Nagaland House,or FRO Kolakata iso of Dimapur Airport. You can visit places on your own.But since you are going to that part of the country for the first time, why not include Arunachal Pradesh, lot to see there.

You don't need to submit any itenary or go through a travel agent to get the permit, they issue a 15 day permit. But you will have to be in a group of 4 to be able to get the permit as they are pretty strict about this rule
