Advice

I have a fair bit of experience of Independent travel in South East Asia but admit to being an absolute beginner as far as India is concerned. My initial plans are to travel to Delhi sometime early 2006 and to see some of the northern Areas within 15 days.
I realise I have to be realistic and journeys from various places take time and dont always turn out right.
My preference is to see Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Varanasi, this may be too ambitious given the time I have . I am not keen to travel overnight by train but day journeys of 5hrs or so are ok. Flights say to Varanasi cost dependeat could be considered.
I am keen for the most if its possible to travel by car and see the countryside.
I have read this forum for some time and theres some great reports and advice out there, perhaps someone would spare some time and offer some to me

many thanks in advance

Welcome to IM

I won't try to advise as I know nothing of Northern India ...yet.

Five places in 15 days = 3 days per place, without considering travel time. (yep, i'm a mathematician - see avatar, left )

Whilst 15 days of moving around isn't exactly going to exhaust you, if it's your first visit you might find yourself wishing for more time in each place..........

Looks doable in 15 days but you might consider dropping Jodhpur from you itinery!
It's a pretty similar experience to Jaipur no need to do both
Perhaps you could use the extra time to see a wildlife park at either Ranthambore (tigers) or Bharatpur (wonderful bird park)
This gives you a little of everything in your 15 days!!
My choice would be Delhi-Jaipur-Agra- Bharatpur and Fatehpur Sikri-Agra-Varanasi-Delhi!!

Hi Jevs,

We only had a day each in Delhi and Agra, but with excellent guides and private vehicles were able to cover all the important sights in this timeframe. ie....

Delhi - Humayun's tomb, Jami Mashid mosque, Qtab Minar, Parliament buildings, Raj Ghat, Birla temple. Would have liked to have lingered longer at some of these and didn't have time to take in any musems either, so if you'd like to see Delhi in more depth, give yourself at least two days.

Agra, arrived early in the morning by train and covered Idmad ud Dullah tomb, Agra Fort and Taj Mahal all in one day and at a comfortable pace. Although no time is long enough to sit and gaze at the Taj, we didn't really feel we needed more time in Agra, so you can possibly economise on your 'time budget' here.

I will say that it would be worth taking a day to see Fatepur Sikri and Bharatpur on your way to Jaipur - again, both are feasible in a day if you have a private car.

Hope this helps

Hello jevs and welcome to IM !

Your itinerary is certainly doable and as you plan to visit in winter, the climate will be lovely too.

I recommend your travelling by train even for overnight journeys, as they're far more comfortable than buses/taxis and faster too.
