advice for travelling india please in august

Hi im a teacher in the uk and love travelling. This august a friend and me plan to travel around India. However, ive heard this is monsoon season in the south. I just wanted to know how bad this would be in august and late July and which areas are affected the most. I am there for 5 week and would like to travel around the north but also visit pondcherry and kerrala both in the south. Would like some advice on the best itenery really.
Also I have travelled with lots of good travel companies for small groups like intrepid and GAP adventures… can anyone recommend one for travelling India?
Thanks
Sami

Hello Sami and welcome to indiamike.com

It may be helpful to give your budget level, then people will know if a group tour they tried will be in your price range.

In August monsoon season should be finished in south India. In north India rains at monsoon are not very uncomfortable, probably you'll enjoy this period of the year. The main problem is the very hot and humid weather but no reason to worry.

Probably the best way to travel in India is by your own, is an easy country for traveling and you can even get your railways tickets by internet at home.

...But Tamil Nadu won't.

If you get the odd shower you'll enjoy it!
