8 days in India - suggestions?
My husband and I will be in India for 8 days in September and would welcome some suggestions for where we should go. Currently we're booked as arriving in Mumbai, leaving out of Delhi (though could change this).
We're def keen on spending a bit of time soaking up the sights/smells of Delhi and going to Agra to see the Taj. We're keen on the must-dos but also love getting off the beaten track and experiencing the 'out of the ordinary'. What else can you recommend in our short time there? |

There is no off the beaten track in the Delhi Agra area. I would've said head for the hills but 8 days (minus 3 or 4 for Delhi/Agra, minimum) will not leave you time for that.
Afraid you will have to try to do the usual thing and take in a bit of Rajasthan as well. You don't have time for more. Avoid Jaipur, would be my only advice there.

I'd suggest that if you only have 8 days then you should not be wasting time "soaking up the sights/smells of Delhi". Delhi is no different to many other third-world cities - it is noisy, dirty and generally unappealing.
For an 8-day trip to remember I would suggest (Mumbai)-Udaipur-Bundi-Agra-(Delhi). As you have only 8 days, and no leeway, don't forget the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. |

Naw. Delhi is actually an interesting city -- with its mix of old and new -- and far more engaging than Mumbai. Given the time you have, I suggest you do the top 10 from any ol guidebook.
Slightly off the beaten path (but accessible by the wonderful Metro) is the main market in Rajori Garden, which I think is worth a visit, and not just to shop. If you can't get enough of teeming markets, I recommend taking a taxi out to the market in Jwala Heri which is more downscale and more "real." The temple at Akshardham is also interesting from a cultural anthropology POV. Avoid the Connaught Place area at all costs -- it's the pits, and reserved for unadventurous types. |
