8-12 days in Southwestern India
After traveling in nothern India, Bangladesh and Nepal, I'll be left with between 8-12 days to see the southwest before flying out of Trivandr....
Any suggestions where I should fly into? Except for taking a backwaters trip and seeing Cochin, I don't have any solid plans. Where would you go/what would you HAVE to see in Goa, Karnataka (along the coastal area) and/or Kerala? |

You'll need to fly into cochin if your planning on doing Cochin.
1. Theres waterfalls and wildlife 2-3 hours from Cochin in the Periyar wildlife sanctuary (Athirapally- Sholayar range) 2. Mountains, wildlife and cooler temperatures in Idduki 3. Beaches in Kovalam, Marari, Varkala 4. Temples/palaces close to Trivandrum Karnataka 1. Start in Bangalore - city, pubs, gardens 2. River ride and temples at Hampi 3. Coffee plantations and wildlife in Coorg 4. Palaces and art in Mysore Goa 1. Beaches, parties, dutch architecture and churches galore This is all in a nutshell, theres plenty more to do in each state. You'll have to dig around depending on what kind of a trip your looking for. |

Good tips. Out of the three, may I second option #2 (Karnataka)
Coorg was first on my mind when I saw the query. Not sure how to quickly zap on to Trivandrum at the end of it, must be doable though. While a little rushed, it might conceivably be possible to move down over Cochin if that's what you want to do one regular daytime ferry ride, then move on to Trivandrum. Or just skip it for now, I'm sure you'll have seen some foresty boatrides in Bangladesh by then?

ps Just had to check of course. To get from Coorg (Kodagu) to Trivandrum, according to http://www.indiagroove.com/ there are direct trains from Mangalore (didn't I read somewhere there are some decent beaches in the immediate vicinity?) to Trivandrum that take 12-15 hours. Kannur (Cannanore) would be another option, and swifter (well, it would be as it's more southerly
).It looks like it would be possible to break the journey in Cochin if so desired. Note that the ferries don't leave from Cochin itself I think (there may be some possibilities), so you can count on a day or 2-3 to get to a nearby town and arrange a ride there, then move on. |
