Hello
I am traveling alone to South India in a few weeks on a pretty tight budget so any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I am going to do the sensible thing of trraveling on overnight sleeper class trains, eating street food, limiting alcohol etc
I plan to head to Goa for a wk or 2, Kerala for 2 weeks and then i havent decided on the final 2 weeks, again any tips would be appreciated. Flying in and out of Mumbai.
I want to stay in single rooms but really dont mind dorms now and again.Would any of the budget rooms have tvs in them or is that just too much of a luxury!!
i was hoping my budget would be around 15 dollars/1150 rupees a day.Is this realistic or do i need to find a few more pennies in the sofa before i leave?

also,
Is it possible to rent mopeds in most places without a driving license?
and finally i really want to watch a few cricket games when i am out there. Is it easy to find out where matches are on and are there frequent matches betweens towns/states at this time of year?

thanks in advance

When are you planning to do this? Any specific reason for Goa? There are quite a few beaches in Karnataka and Maharashtra which are not often visited by tourists outside India.

Im heading there on Jan 23rd until the 5th March.
Yeah, i want to hit some beaches in Goa. Mainly just to chill in a hammock, read, walk/moped around the small towns/local area, people watch
Canoe around the backwaters, cant imagine staying on a houseboat will be possible on my budget. Id like to find relaxed hippish towns, meet nice people and that have a few sights of interest.
Thanks for your quick reply

Hello there,

I also want to travel in the south of India in February/March. I will arrive on 12.2. in Goa. Maybe we can group up and thus save some money and have a safe travel.

I have traveled to many countries already, but this is my first trip to India and my first time travelling alone. It would be nice to have a travel buddy, at least for the first weeks of the trip. I do not have a set travel route but am quite flexible, as I want simply travel and relax.

Great! Why don't we further write via pm. You can't write/receive pms here, only after you have put 10 posts in the forum.

Hello,

do you already have an idea what places/ beaches you want to go to?

If you want to communicate via PM, you can only once you have posted a certain number of posts (10 I think) on this platform..

I will also be in South India around those dates, from second week in February onwards. Final itinerary is not confirmed but I would be happy to meet up.

Hellooo,

That is quite a tight budget so I would very suprised if you found a tv in your room! You will easily find somewhere in Goa playing the cricket though.

There aren't dorms in India but you can find single rooms. I travelled alone and found accommodation to be my biggest expense. I was on a similar budget to you and did find it quite difficult. Be preapred to haggle for the price of your room and don't give up if you feel you are being ripped off, there will be plenty of other places for you to stay! Its height of season in the South now and Goa prices were room prices were relatively expensive for India so be prepared to shop around when you get there!

Its so easy to get mopeds, its quite scary!

Have an amazing trip, I'm very jealous

Mel

Also, I would avoid Mumbai if I were you. It is very expensive and I got a shock when I got there. (It was the end of my trip so I had almost completely run out of money!) I think you will struggle to find accommodation within budget.

a tv? can you actually watch that stuff?? hehehehe... also, no ac for me please, i pay extra for no ac? (j/k, but seriously, fuck ac)

Will be my first solo trip as well, starting end of february... I'll probably better head for the (southern) mountains first ; )

Not sure at all what to expect, did 4 months with a buddy in 09... I think sharing rooms with people is a really good option as it's often much easier to find a 'double'... Spose I'll just go ahead and trust random strangers based on a ridiculous amount of pronoia...
