I will be flying into Delhi on the 14th July and have 3 weeks. I would like to go to Darahmsala, and then on to Ladakh to go trekking. If possible I would also like too spend some time in a nature reserve. Is it better to Fly direct to Leh and after the trek get the bus back via Darahmsala, or the other way around. I have so little time that I don't want to get it wrong. Want advice from anyone who has done this trip. Also welcome any other suggestions of great places to see in the general area.

Hi, welcome to IM.
Try if you can fit in a trip to Kaziranga National Park. They have Rhinos.

I didn't want to reply to this thread because I'm not too sure about the information/advice I could offer.
Whilst I agree that Kaziranga National Park is likely to be one of the very best that India has to offer, it's location in Upper Assam must rule it out for you, firstly on a time/distance basis, and secondly on a time of year basis, I'm no expert on weather, but I'd be surprised if Kaziranga is not one of the wettest places on earth by the end of July, I'd be surprised if the park were open. Flying to Leh???? Are there not acclimatisation issues here? (I really don't know) I would suggest working your way slowly up to Leh and then flying back.

Better check the weather in Ladakh and H.P., before finalising any programme. Currently the monsoon seems to be creating havoc in H.P.

Kazirangha etc..
Hi,
I was in Kazhiranga in February, and I distinctly remember the rangers telling me that the sanctuary would close in April for a few months.. Not sure when does it reopen.. but from what I remember, it would not be sometime in August. In any case, going to Kazhiranga means at least 3 days from Delhi (particularly with the fact that the flight to Guwahati are often delayed..mine were both ways ).. so you have to budget an extra day. As regards to doing Dharmasala / Leh.. in which order. While normally I would recommend Dharmsala before Leh.. getting used to the altitude.. but I guess, after a bus ride.. in any case you would need a day or two to recover. |

thanks for replies
It sounds like the best thing for me to do is to fly to Leh as the manali - leeh road is closed right now.
