One option would be to do Delhi, Rajasthan and Agrain about eleven days and then go on to the South. A lot of people do the following in about eleven days

Delhi - Jaipur
Jaipur- Pushkar
Pushkar - Deogarh
Deogarh - Udaipur
Udaipur - Ranakpur - Jodhpur
Jodhpur - Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer - Bikaner
Bikaner - Jaipur
Jaipur - Agra

From Agra you an fly to Khajuraho and then on to Varanasi for the North Indian experience!

Alternatively you can travel at a leisurely pace and spend more time in Rajasthan and move on to Mumbai and Goa before flying out!

However if it is culture you are looking for, the best may be

Two weeks for Rajasthan and the north and then a week in South India, mainly the temples of Tamil Nadu.

Depends on your adoration level

Hampi in north Karanataka is worth several days.
A trek in the Nandi Devi Biosphere is nice. (7-10 days)
Treks out of Sikkim and Darjeeling are excellent. (7-10 days)
A couple days in Delhi can be pleasant visiting ruins

Allow a day for travel when going more than 100 kms.

Rajasthan is over-rated and boring unless you do a 3-4 night desert overnight. Jaisalmer, Jodphur, Pushkar and other places have the usual assortment of forts, markets.

Goa is for people who want to re-live the Ecstasy-fueled raves in Thailand.

Kerala's waterways are nice, but you can't swim because of the pollution. Rent a canoe and stay off the over-rated houseboats.

You can arrive in either one, I think it is good to get the contrast between the two very different cities, Mumbai and Delhi. (Great train service between the two, only 17 hours). In addition, while in Delhi you could go to Rishikesh for your Yoga fix or go further north to Shimla or Mussorie.

I have Hampi on my wishlist.

3 weeks

3 weeks is not a lot of time, especially if it is your first time, you spend a few days (if not the whole trip) getting acclimatized (is that a word!) to India, let alone the mind-blowing surreal experience of waking up in a city like Bombay, so you need to take a few dyas at the begining to take it easy and get your bearings and establish some confort zone for yourself.

Mumbai(3 days), Golden Triangle(5 days), Rishikesh(3 days) and the hills of Himachal or Uttaranchal(8 days).

SHIMLA's advice looks pretty good to me! A taste of exotic India (getting hotter by the minute) and the cool of the mountains. You lucky girl!
