| 3 weeks from Delhi to Calcutta in July Hello everybody! Me and my friend will be in India for 3 weeks, July 5, 2007 – July 25. It is our first time and we will be backpacking and travelling by train. Arriving in Delhi and leaving from Calcutta, the tickets are already bought. I am having doubts between 2 itineraries: 5,6,7 Delhi (overnight train to Udaipur) 8,9,10,11 Udaipur (overnight train to Jaipur) 12,13,14 Jaipur 15,16 Agra & Fatehpur Sikri 17,18 Orchha or Khajuraho 19,20,21,22 Varanasi 23,24 Calcutta 25 flight home Or 5,6,7 Delhi 8,9,10 Jaipur 11,12 Agra & Fatehpur Sikri 13,14,15,16 Orchha & Khajuraho 17,18,19,20 Varanasi 21,22 Bhodgaya 23,24 Calcutta 25 flight home We would love to see Varanasi, Jaipur and the Taj Mahal for sure. But Udaipur sounds really great but is a bit out of direction and it is a pity that there are no train connections from Udaipur to Varanasi. Which itinerary sounds better and is more rewarding? Do you think this is possible considered the heath in July and the distances and how long to stay in each place? Any information for this itinerary, the above locations, train information you can provide will be most appreciated. Thanks! |

| Account Closed | Last year there was no rain in Rajasthan. So the main attraction of Udaipur the lake Palace & the other lake is gone. AND in the highest Summer Udaipur could be a little too much. If I had to fix up an itinerary for my groups I would have put it like below. Delhi - Agra ( By morning train) - Bharatpur - Jaipur by some train / Bus - Jodhpur to see the famous fort - train to Varanasi (Marudhar Express) - Darjeeling to see the monsoon in the Himalayas - Kolkata. You might skip Bodhgaya ( you have already seen the monastery and stupa in Sarnath in varanasi). or skip Darjeeling to see Bodhgaya. |

| new itinerary! Thanks for your help, really good advice about Udaipur! Darjeeling we would not do this time. Hopefully next time and then combine it with more mountaintrekking. For our 3 weeks in July, what do you think about this? 5,6,7 july Delhi 8 Agra ( By morning train) & Fatehpur Sikri 9,10,11 Jaipur 12,13,14 Jodhpur 15,16,17,18 Varanasi (Marudhar Express) 19,20 Bodhgaya 23,24 Kolkata 25 flight home It is a pity because I would have loved to see Orchha as well. Do you think I better replace Bodhgaya by Orchha? And if you have any suggestions on train travel please advice me. Should we book the train in advance or will this be fine at location? Thank you very much! Greetings from a rainy Amsterdam |

| Account Closed | Orchha , Khajuraho in.. Bodhagaya Out. I Suport Kaalikrates about going to Jodhpur first and then follow the route till Agra as his suggestion. Then continue till Orchaa next morning. To Khajuraho from Jhanshi. After Khajuraho you catch train from Satna to Reach Varanasi and then to Kolkata. I don't whay you put only two nights in Kolkata? Though I know that the Amsterdam office of Tourism dept. of India is not so supportive to Kolkta. But you can be sure that it is better to put some extra nights to Kolkata than in Delhi. It is the ultimate destination for the tourist. And there are so many things to feel here (not see only) which you won't find in guide books. I think you better buy the railway tickets in advance. Though there is the Foreign tourist quota in Delhi and some other bigger place (Varanasi - Kolkta). But it is better if you can book it well in advance. becasue the trains are alwasy full. when I have bigger grops I buy ticekts 3 months in advance. I will be going for some climbing & treking expeditions from 28th May. will be back on 10th July. So when you are in Kolkata You can contact me. FYI I am from Kolkata. Though I organise & guide groups all over India, Nepal, Bangladesh. |

| Bodhgaya or Sarnath? Ok, after a while and reading a lot on Indiamike we have settled down our plan. 5,6,7 july Delhi 8,9,10 Jodhpur 11,12,13 Jaipur 14,15 Agra & Fatehpur Sikri 16,17,18,19 Varanasi 20,21 Bodhgaya 22,23,24 Kolkata 25 flight home I have already booked some traintravels by e-ticket, which is really great by the way! After reading about Bihan, I am wondering is it safe to travel there to go to Bodhgaya? we were planning to take the train from Varanasi at 16.25 and will arrive in Gaya at 21.40. Then we should still take a taxi or bus to reach Bodhgaya. I am really interested in boeddhism and was looking forward to a zen meditation session. But there are so many negative reports regarding travelling in Bihan....I am asking is it a risk? Would it be an alternative to spend some time in Sarnath instead? Hope to hear from you India lovers!!!! |
