20 Days in India Dec-Jan

Hi- My wife and I are planning to go to India in Dec-Jan for 3-4 weeks. We were thinking about (but are not in any way fixed on Delhi, Rajasthan, Veranasi, Agra and perhaps Ajanta/Ellora, but are open to other suggestions. We'd were thinking about the North because we prefer cool weather. We tend to travel slowly, preferring to spend several days in each place. We would also like to have guides- as I've come to realize that without someone who knows the local areas I often miss very interesting opportunities. I would welcome suggestions as to itineraries, guides, hotels, places to miss. Things that we like include good food, music, art, markets and wandering the streets. Thanks, in advance for any help you have to offer. -Howard

Save for a flight, Ellora & Ajanta are a long way out from there. (If that's what you want, I'd suggest getting a flight into Delhi and out of Mumbai if you can.)

That northern stretch could easily be done in your time frame of course, it's one of the most popular routes, and 3-4 weeks should be ample. Just read around the relevant sections of this site some more, or check some guidebooks on it.

IMHO travel around Christmas / New Year requires some careful planning and pre-booking of hotels and trains (if that is the way you want to move from place to place).
I've been to India four times, always Dec/Jan and only once did I not pre-book.... Be prepared for a lot of tourists, both Indian and international.

I would suggest Delhi - Pushkar - Jodhpur - Jaisalmer - Jaipur - Agra - Varanasi - Orcha - Delhi, maybe fit in Ranthambore or Bundi if you like.
