2 weeks on $1000 USD?

Hello again everyone,

I am trying to firm up my travel plans for next October. I am traveling with my Mom from Delhi - Agra - Varanasi - Darjeeling - Kolkata. We are looking at a total of 13 nights, and trains to get to the locations listed above. At least two of those - Varanasi to Darjeeling (or at least NJB), and Darjeeling to Kolkata will be overnight trains.

I am hoping to not spend more than $1000 on transport and accomodations for the two of us over these 13 nights. Is this realistic? When I went last August, most of the places I stayed were around 20 - 30 USD a night, with the most expensive being in Delhi for about 40 USD per night, however this was also low season.

The $1000 does not have to account for food or entrance fees, I would however like to be sure that it could cover trains and hotels. What do you think?

I you are sharing accomodation this amount (38,000) rupees - say less 5,000 for trains - will mean 2,500 a night for rooms.

This buys pretty luxurious accomodation.

As you have some previous experience as to what USD 30-40 will get you for accomodation, and if you think Mom is up to that, then I think, yes, absolutely doable . . . and with some shine!
