Hi all,

I am going to India (Northern) with two other friends at the end of the month, and will stay there for roughly two weeks. Itís our first time to step into India. Frankly speaking, I donít even have much idea about India before I started planning the trip. So we came up with a few places where we want to go, including Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, and Jammu and Kashmir. Another thing is one of our friends will leave in the middle of the trip. She will take a flight in Delhi and we want to accompany her.

So based on all the above, we came up with an intinerary as follows:

27 Apr / Arrive Delhi at 21:00
Stay 1 night in Delhi

28 Apr / Delhi > Darjeeling (via New Jalpaiguri)
Train from Delhi to New Jalpaiguri (6:40 - 8:20 (29 Apr) / approx. 26 hrs)
Taxi from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling (approx. 3 hrs)

29 Apr - 1 May / In Darjeeling
Tiger Hill, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

1 May - 2 May / Darjeeling > Delhi > Srinagar
Darjeeling -> Bagdogra -> Delhi -> Srinagar
Stay 1 night in Delhi
Flight from Delhi to Srinagar on 2 May 8:35-11:00

2 May - 4 May / In Srinagar
Houseboat on Dal Lake
Stay 2 nights in Srinagar

4 May - 5 May / Srinagar > Sonamarg
Taxi or Jeep (approx. 2hrs)
Horse ride to Thajiwas Glacier
Stay 1 night in Sonamarg

5 May / Sonamarg > Srinagar > Delhi
Taxi or Jeep
Flight From Srinagar to Delhi
5 May 14:55-16:35

6 May / In Delhi
My friend departs from Delhi 22:50

6 May / Delhi > Varanasi 06 May 2010 / 18:45 - 7:30 (07 May)
approx. 13 hrs

7 May - 8 May / In Varanasi
The Ghats, and river trip on the Ganges, Sarnath

8 May / Varanasi > Agra
MARUDHAR EXPRES 4853 (BSB > AF)
17:20 - 5:55 (9 May)
approx. 13 hrs

9 May / In Agra

. . .

Afetr browsing the discussion pages on this forum, it seems we shouldnít put too much into our 2-week trip. So I would like to seek advice from experienced travelers, for the following issues in particular:

1) It seems too much to include both Kashmir and Darjeeling in a week. I am thinking of going to only one of them. Personally, I would prefer Kashmir as itís closer to Delhi and other cities that we are targeting. Another friend of mine wants to include Darjeeling because the road to Leh (in J&K) is still blocked during our visit, which means viewing the Himalayas impossible. So my friend added Darjeeling for that purpose. Do we have alternatives if we want to see the Himalayas (or beautiful mountain or landscape sceneries) and keep Kashmir only?

2) The apparent itinerary put a lot of time in transportation. Would there be smarter ways to reduce the time spent on transportation by altering our destinations?

3) If we follow the current itinerary, we will drop by Delhi on and off for times but we never have time to really explore that. To make things worse, the time we will be in Delhi is mainly in evenings. So the question is, if we want to alter the second part of the trip only (after my friend left), wouldnít it be too rush to travel all Delhi / Varanasi / Agra? I am thinking of going to either Varanasi or Agra only . . . please advise on that . . .

Though I am pretty excited, I do not have much preset expectation for the places. I am not a big fan of gazing the popular spots one by one, and donít want to be in a hurry. I prefer to explore freely upon arrival, and dig into the distinguishing features of a place. Also, I prefer to stay in a place longer rather than rushing for more places.

Based on all these, could anyone suggest for a better itinerary? Many many thanks!

(Sorry that the message is a bit too long . . .)

Cheers,
Yip

Hey Yip..

You have packed in too much in two weeks

As I have been to all this places - my personal suggestion would be:

Drop Darjeeling and go for Kashmir

Drop Varanasi and go for Agra in the second leg.

Himalayas is at a distance from Darjeeling and there is every possibility of gog and clouds. Apart from Sonemarg you should include Gulmarg which is picturesque and for the famous rope-way ride.

You can always make a trip later covering Darjeeling, Varanasi and Delhi which will fall in a line.

The other option is to land at Calcutta directly then you can cover Darjeeling , Varanasi, Delhi, Agra - on a single leg and then head for Kashmir on the second leg.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hi DD (et al),

Thanks for your helpful suggestions! Sorry, have been busy in the past few days and canít get back here till now . . .

Further to your suggestions, will Srinagar + Sonamarg + Gulmarg be enough for 7 days (28 April Ė 5 May)?

I will have to stick to Delhi as the return ticket to Delhi has been bought . . . but the route that you mentioned starting with Calcutta is nice and I shall try one day . . .

Thanks again!
