2weeks end of January
My wife and I are travelling to India end of January 2008 arriving and leaving from Delhi. We have exactly 14 days in India although our first day may be limited due to jet lag and arriving very late the night before. We have never been to India and are interested in Agra Rajasthan, Varanasi,Khajuraho Inrternal flights no problem or trains if limited distance or time. We are high energy, up early and like to pack it in, not museum goers, more interested in outdoor sites and people. we are prepared to hire aprivate car and driver/tour guide everywhere( please give me an idea on this cost)but not required necessarily. Hotels should be ok to arrange on our own( middle of the range). We are not interested in group travel. Any suggestions on itinerary, routing, and times in various locations would be appreciated. Also any advice on travelling betwen cities, eg taking a one hour flight usually requires getting to airport, being early flying, getting bags and getting to hotel, 5 hours probably. Is it better to take 2-3 hour train ride instead. That type of specific info would be very helpful. Also weather/clothing recommendations. We tend to travel carryon only. Any help greatly appreciated.

Except for the Delhi to Agra run, your other destinations would require overnight trains; there are few "2-3 hour" train rides in India and, for example, you can't reach Khajuraho by train -- you'd have to take a bus part of the way, or fly.
Northern India in January can be cold and foggy;not freezing (arund 5C) but very damp because of fog from the rivers. Days can be sunny and warmer. Take lots of clothing you can layer, and don't forget your silk long-underwear. It packs small and keeps you toasty warm. Two weeks isn't much time; if you definitely want Khajuraho, Varanasi and Agra, it won't leave much time for Rajasthan, so what cities do you want to see there? Namaste India Tours will give you a tour of Rajasthan (with car and driver) so you might want to check them out at http://www.namasteindiatours.com/Why.htm If you are "high-energy" people, India may slow you down; nothing moves very quickly there. |

Suggestion: Less time in Jaipur, more in Varanasi. In Varanasi it is more walking, less use of car.
