2 girls, 2 weeks, 4 cities: Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Kolkata for January 2009

Hello all!

A little background: I'm Becky, a 26 YO from New York planning a 2 week trip to India in January 2009 as a college graduation present for my sister, Mel. She's always talked about wanting to visit India, so I have a general idea of what she wants to do and see- but this is a surprise, so there are limits to what I can ask about her preferences.

I have 14 days to divide amongst 4 cities:

New Delhi
Sights: Dili Haat, Humayun's Tomb, Gandhi museum
Accomodation: Probably a Sheraton hotel (free, from their rewards program)

Agra
Sights: Taj Mahal
Accomodation: Agra Sheraton

Varanasi
Sights: ghats, walking
Accomodation: a guesthouse on the Ganges

Kolkata
Sights: Mother House, cooking lessons
Accomodation: a guesthouse or hostel

How many days would you suggest per city?

A few other odds and ends:
  • I'd prefer to take trains between cities, unless it will significantly cut down our time to do things.
  • Neither of us likes to travel at breakneck speed, so if this itinerary sounds rushed, please say so.
  • This will be our first trip to India, but not Asia. We have both been to the Philippines several times.
  • Any guidebook recommendations? I usually use Lonely Planet.

Quick reply to 'bump' your thread to the top.

If I give some suggestions for how long to stay in each place, others can add their comments.

Delhi 4 days
Agra 2 days (inc. Fathepur Sikri)
Varanasi 4 days
Kolkata 4 days

Lonely Planet is still the best guidebook for the big cities.

I second Steven's suggestion.
Include Fathepur Sikri and Dayalbagh to your sight seeing list in Agra.
There are many more sights in Delhi, please refer posts in Delhi forum. You have not mentioned Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar etc. etc.
Similarly you have many more places to visit in Kolkata
