100 days in India. mid July to end of October to North India

Hello... my fellow travellers.

After a long time of hard work... finally im going to reward myself for some travelling (which I love)... actually im travelling at the moment ha ha... New Zealand my home for the last year and a half... but im from Mexico, going there after India.

Well im going from the 15th of July to the 22 of October... 100 days in India.

Im not much of a guide book person... i just let the experiences happen... but India being a big place I would at least know the regions im going to visit.

My plan is visiting the north... would appreciate some suggestions of regions to visit... in my mind at the moment is... Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh... but Im still planning... i dont like travelling in a rush (im mexican)....

I love exploring different cultures, nature is my best friend and food is what keeps me alive.

so yep... suggestions of regions or magical places is greatly appreciated...
Im going as well to the library here where I live and take out a few books... and read.. read... read .... any suggestion of books is as well more than welcome.

Cheers...

Sergio

If you love nature then Himalayas are there for you. Is Uttar Pradesh for Taj Mahal and Agra?

Except for cultural information, I've always found that the best guidebooks are fellow travelers on their way from a place I'm going to go. I always find it helpful to put a person/a sensibility with an answer.

As for reading, on my first trip (in '82) I read a lot of VS Naipaul; Dominique LaPierre (Freedom at Midnight); AL Basham (The Wonder that was India) (good historical/cultural info/a lot to wade through, but for me, worth it); Geeta Mehta, Karma Cola. My fourth and fifth trips have been to Varanasi, and Varanasi only, and have read - numerous times - Diana Eck's great book - Banares - City of Light; over 300 pages on Varanasi (and Varanasi is a Must in my book). As an Eastern Philosophy minor in college I'd read the Bhagavad Gita, and have since found a very good edition, translated and edited by Eknath Eswaran. October is a great month to visit Varanasi.

The manana approach will serve you well; when in doubt, slow down.

You've got a nice long time and you are starting in the summer, so I would suggest devoting your first two months to the cooler north, which it seems you already have decided.

Then you have another 40 days and I would head down to the plains to take in another completely different India travel experience. India is huge and varied and you will have time to see many wonderful places! I'm very jealous!

I believe you will meet many people on your trip, other travelers and local people, who will give you great ideas of where to go, as you go.

You have the luxury to do it as you feel like it and that's great!

Also, the longer you are there, the easier (and cheaper) it will get as you become more familiar with everything.

When you come down out of the mountains, you are in the "plains."

All the flat, non-mountainous or hilly areas.

When it's very hot, people who can afford to, leave the plains for higher elevations to cool off.
