Certainly the rates a local would pay - I think negotiating from afar is difficult. There are usually the middlemen you are negotiating with, either a travel agent, or the owner of a larger business. Small time car owner-drivers are not going to put telephone numbers or websites on the internet and these are the people who will give you the good rates. The thing is to stay first of all at a reputable hotel, where the manager or owners are hopefully 'honest', then ask them for a local driver they could recommend for tours, or where to go to ask re a driver e.g. which taxi stand etc. If you have in mind the rates that are quoted currently here, then you have a good bargaining position. The more you know, then the more they will accommodate you at the price you are setting. It's not easy, mind you, it can be a bit of a hassle, and sometimes it's simpler to settle for a higher price which you are happy to pay in the scheme of things!

I think all this advice is very useful but I think in the long run for this time I'll have to pay the higher price. I've got a limited time in India (25 days) so against my preferences I've felt the need to plan most of it. I don't really fancy trying to do deals with my two kids in tow on my first couple of hours in Delhi, I'd rather just start the tour.

However I'm going to split the tour in two and arrange the first 11 days from here. That way I'll only pay over the odds for the first half and can try my luck at reduced prices for the second half.

Out of interest one of my quotes received is for 64000Rs for 10 nights but it includes fairly good hotels, e.g. Haveli Pal Inn (Heritage Room) in Jodhpur, and we have had to have a room big enough for us parents and two extra beds for the kids.
The split is Rs31400 for accomodation and Rs32600 for the travel in an Innova.

850 pounds for 11 days hotels and a car and driver? Sounds like a bargain, mate. Imagine what it would cost in the UK! Have fun.

You can always get a better price for anything in India, but as you say, is it worth the effort? If my experience is anything to go on, the second round will be easier and cheaper.

That really puts it into perspective as that's fairly okay hotels (many with pools), for four of us, including airport pickup. The tour will start in Delhi and end in Udaipur so the tour company has at least one day (if not two days) of travel on top of the tour.

I've checked the hotels and the web site prices are what's been quoted, but I won't have to worry about the reservation falling through, sending credit card details or money or having to find another place in my one is full.

Oddly though the only cheap hotel we requested was the Tourist Rest House in Agra (the wife's been there before so it's kind of a revisit) and the tour company has quoted Rs3400...and that can't be right, that's way too dear.

too much hal !!! 3200 INR for innova ?// cant even imagine ??/doesnt matetr you are western or indian the prices are same for all.whatever the quote you get in delhi is far costly than jaipur .wondering why so?? infact the car is same ?? running is same??than why overpaid..???
i got innova long back for the tour along with 3 of mine friends at the rate of what i m written above so it make me think over and over..??

hiring a car from delhi always sounds expensive becuase they will ask you more the charges of car going back to delhi[ which is easily so far away from anywhere in rajasthan] mounting the prices..so better have it booked from elsewhere from jaipur even they do provide a airport pick up from delhi .. mate dont you like if saving money???life is very expensive back at home??/

well i am not gonna blandishing jaipur but showing the right path..

Hey

This is what google threw up

http://www.taxirentalindia.com/book-taxi-in-india.php

I find booking cabs in advance too expensive... Most will try to rip you off.

The whole practice of pre-booking car rentals etc is not so popular in India.. I think you're better off haggling once you're here.. You'll have many options in terms of trvael companies etc.
