You should help fix that by marking up the roads on openstreetmaps.org

There's no Dummy's guide to Buying a GPS.

Most GPS device manufactures makes money on selling you maps. But I think that you can only get OpenStreetMap maps on Garmin after reading this http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Magellan and pages under http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:GPS_unit

So, save yourself some time and just buy a Garmin.

I think it would be outdated pretty fast, and other pages surely list a lot of information on Garmin GPS units used for various situations like: Trekking, driving, walking, running, cycling, sailing and flying.

Thanks again JonBen

I guess ill keep it narrowed down to Garmins. Am waiting for a contact from the US to confirm whether he will be coming to India soon. Hopefully he can get me a nice device at US rates.

The highest price for Etrex20 in the US is $199.00 (INR 10,000). Some of the sites sell it for as low as $173
On the other hand, the same device starts at INR 13,000 in India.

If you look at marine charts, you will find that, especially in the rocky places, they are based on surveys that might be a hundred years, or more, old. The seabed hasn't changed! However, the difference between the co-ordinates of the chart and the co-ordinates of the sat-nav device were not understood. This was responsible for accidents, at least among non-professional sailors.

These days, I believe that correction factors are printed on charts. Possibly they can be applied in the GPS itself, but I'm guessing about that. I haven't done any navigating for nearly two decades, and, even when I did, sat-nav (later it got called GPS) was so expensive I rarely encountered it.

We need a professional! Where's The Capn?

If we see him appearing on the horizon, so long as we know his hight, we will easily be able to calculate our distance from him. In fact, we can look it up in the almanac: the Table of Mahajans Rising and Dipping
Better laid than never Just that GPS threads remind me of work so I often avoid them...

Umm, it is a question of different datums being used with charts and the GPS. A small note will indicate this on marine charts saying something like.. "Satellite derived positions must be moved 1 minute southward and 0.5 minutes eastward to correspond with this chart".

Which means you must make the corrections before plotting your Lat/Long on the chart. The error is usually small, although it can be more than half a nautical mile in some parts of the world.

And, umm, satnav and GPS are different things. For one, the satnav never gave you a fix in real time; it usually gave you your position for as much as(or more than) half and hour ago (fix interval increasing with increasing latitude).

That model seems like a good entry level choice. I found it for $160 using froogle.com

Yes, there are quite a few discounts offered for garmins in other markets. Unfortunately, getting it shipped from any of those sites to India, is not a good idea. Its more economical to get someone traveling to India carry it along with him for you, or buying it from an Indian dealer.
