Survey of India maps for trekking

Hi together,

Seems it will be easier for locals to purchase Survey of India maps...

Read my post here:
Map availability in India

Gives new experiences from Indian trekkers with Survey of India, especially with digitized PDF files? *without ulterior motives*

Andreas
, I read the newspaper article the same day... I am waiting for the Survey of India to implement it.

There was something along those lines [though not so specific] around three years ago [i still have the cutting] and I am waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting... and hopefully not falling asleep... zzzzzz

Hi Avid,

isn't it possible to use this online-order (now or in future for you)?
http://www.surveyofindia.gov.in/MTR/.../soi/login.htm

Curious...

Both of us are looking for Himalayan maps... these are still "restricted" as far as i cud see the website.

The unrestricted maps paper copy was quite cheap [14 rupees per 1:50000 sheet], in fact 110 rs is expensive !!!

Oh well, we have google earth and the "old" US Army online maps

Make do with these...

I bought a great map years ago in Naini Tal at the tourist office that covered the whole western indian himalayan range.
And also a Survey of India map of Gangotri-Yamnotri.

Hi Andreas
Great to see you back!
How was your trip to Himachal?
You know, I've been hunting the net for the soviet topos like a mad dog but without success. And here you show up and provide the link like it is just there to be clicked!
You really are a genius!
cheers

Post US Army Map Service @ Univ. of Texas

They are a little dated, but the US Army maps at on the University of Texas website are the most detailed maps of India I have found online. If nothing else they may be interesting from a historical point of view.

Cheers.

Though I just briefly went to the sit of US Army maps they seem OK. They can still be of help for remote treks.
Thanks

Hi all! For Ladakh the maps made in Switzerland by Olizane(www.olizane.ch) can be very useful. Excellent maps of the nepalese and tibetan Himalaya are made by the Chinese Institute of Glaciology.

@joe: Why hunting, ask me... You "googled" wrong! Google understand Cyrillic too: Индия - (India) and Топографические карты - (Topographic maps)...

OK... Let's create the ultimate "IndiaMike - Trekking map - thread" here!

Russian maps:

The Russian cartographers, old friends of India, was quite busy in the seventies!

500k maps are available here (online):
TIFF - high quality: http://www.topomaps.eu/asia/asia500k.shtml
JPEG - lower quality: http://mapy.mk.cvut.cz/data/Centr._A...o%20maps_500k/ or here: http://blankonthemap.free.fr/3_geogr...carte_rus2.htm

200k and 100k maps are rare and not available online.
Perhaps Russian IM'ers could help with digitized files?!!
For example one 100k map: Spiti/Ladakh "Parang La"

India 1:200,000 Topographic Map Index, north part:
http://www.omnimap.com/cgi/graphic.p...r/6476525a.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------

US - 250k AMS maps (online):

High quality: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/india/
Lower quality: http://mapy.mk.cvut.cz/data/Indie-India/India_250k/ and here: http://blankonthemap.free.fr/3_geogr..._carte_us2.htm

----------------------------------------------------------------

Ladakh and Zanskar:

The 3 Olizane maps are the best, realy!
http://www.abram.ch/mapping/lzmap/

Where to order the Ladakh Zanskar Trekking Maps:
http://www.abram.ch/mapping/lzmap/series_order.php

--------------------------------------------------------------

Garhwal & Sikkim:

150k Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research maps:
http://www.alpineresearch.ch/alpine/en/geogr.html

---------------------------------------------------------------

But the 50k Survey of India maps are still the best... Example: Pin Parvati Pass

Yessir!! will do in future.

Oo..wow nice work Andreas!

Deciphering the Russian maps are a different issue though.
Well, as you mentioned, Russian IM'ers could certainly help here too. Or else we may have to match them with the US Army ones side-by-side.
Personally, I'm trying to consider only what is available on the net for free at the moment. Priced products are always 'there' for the asking.
cheers

I´ve been toying with combining these on my blog :

For Kinnaur and Spiti we´re still stuck with the Leoman maps , right ? Last time around their main advantage was in improving my (abysmal) Hindi vocabulary..

The image url appears in the email notification in my Inbox, and clicking that works fine. However, the image doesn't show in your post above, nor is there a url/link.
