Folks, this thread is for any queries in connection with SOI maps, not just addresses.
So fire away, I'm sure someone will come up with the right info.

According to the survey of India's website, they seem to only want to sell maps to Indian nationals. Are these offices Survey of India offices? I'm looking for topo maps for trekking - or at least for finding good places to try it, but I have this feeling that my desire to get away from people and find a nice trail somewhere with no guides, no touts and a map that is reasonably accurate runs afoul of state secrets.

Is there a way of getting a hold of any of these maps legally?

Don't worry about what the website says, fact is anyone can buy the maps from any SOI office - so long as you don't take them out of India.
Plenty of foreigners buy their maps, and since you're a resident, you shudn't have any problems. Tell them exactly that if they ask why you want topo maps - to go trekking. I shud warn you that there are many 'restricted' maps in the border areas which they won't sell you, but that applies to private Indian citizens as well.

Thanks!

I'll give registering a try using my driver's licence as proof of ID and see if I can buy maps.

The office in Delhi on Janpath near the Tibetan market had been demolished when I went there a few weeks ago - it's now a vacant plot with no suggestion as to where it might have moved to. A shame as they were helpful and central in location.

Cap'n - you've revived this thread with the exact thought I had. We bought the complete set back in 1992 (it's a huge, heavy and very detailed set of documents) from the book fair held in Jaipur. Difficult to read (the maps roll up easily if not weighted down properly) but very informative if you know how to read 'em.

Thanks - I've been there a couple of times. The least helpful, most obstructive, so called sales office I've ever been to. It's also tiny compared to the old place on Janpath. They took one look at me and said I had to go to their central office elsewhere as I was a foreigner and there was nothing they could sell me. Tried again a few months later with the same result, so gave up.
