Can someone suggest a good source of road maps for India? I am interested in routes along the major highways as well as navigating through major cities (say, the 8 major cities) by motorcycle.

Is there one definitive set of driving maps that can be purchased outside of India? Can you suggest where I could purchase them?

The Lonely Planet makes the best set of maps of India in book form that I have come across.

There are no maps available that compare favorably to the maps you get in places like England. This because we Indians are afraid that people will bomb us if we let them buy maps (a rule introduced during WW II). The Surveyor-General's office has said that all maps will be available, but this has not happened as yet.

The best road maps are those published by TTK. But even those have mistakes. If you're driving in South India note that NH 63 appears on the map, but does not, in fact, exist.

Other than the TTK maps Outlook Traveller magazine have now begun to offer some nice maps. Check out their web site
