Bingo I just remembered who done the excellent Trekking map I saw of the Garwhal Kumaon region!!
The Survey Of India produce the best detailed maps of India, however getting your hands on them can be a pain in the butt I'm told
I first learned of this in a book I read on the Great Trunk Road. The author had all kind of trouble buying maps from the Survey people in Calcutta!!
They just didn't want to part with their maps using all kind of excuses from security to out of print!!
A friend had the same experience at thier offices on Janpath Delhi and according to this Article from their head office in Dehradun the picture is little altered!!!!

It's a shame they do produce good maps, so here's the details from their website on how to obtain maps!!

Edit I've just noticed the OP is looking for online maps sorry!!! I'll leave the post here since it might be usefull to others looking for info on maps!

For online maps you could try Mapsofindia
From the Survey of India website:

Question

Then, I'm certainly better to buy a good Goodyear India map with all the highways, etc, before departure?

No, decent road maps are available in India it's just the better small scale maps that are difficult to find!
Though buying before you go is also an option!

I'd recommend the 'Lonely Planet Atlas of India and Bangladesh', if you can still find one now that its out of print. Its an excellent book, and shows minor and major roads, railways, cities, towns, and even quite small villages. City maps too, and a good index. I'd be lost without mine (sometimes literally!)

Cyberhippie, I think that Dan is looking, online, for maps; not looking for online maps! Great Post, it is a major reference source and I hope people will be finding it for a long time to come.

For an online source of maps, try this link: Maps of India

EDIT: Oh sorry, Cyberhippie included that info already.

Ah, ok... my misunderstanding.

In that case This product won't be any good to you, but, if you haven't seen it already it might be interesting.

Actually, lit looks as if MapsOfIndia do do downloadable stuff...

Here's a link that I suspect I got from IM some time back. You might find it to be of at least academic interest.

Not necesarily what the OP was looking for but I fugure the title of the thread makes this a perfectly decent place to post this link:

http://www.belicek.cz/indie/staty.html

Not the higest quality, these (i assume scanned in) images are more detailed than most of what you find for free on the web.
