Map shop Delhi/Shimla
Hi All,
Posted this on Delhi forum, go no response, not really sure where to post this question, so am doing it here... does anybody know if there is a "Nest & Wings" shop in Delhi? I have this address from their website but emailling them does not work... H 6/16, Malviya Nagar, New Delhi - 110017 (India) Tel.: 91-011-26681245, 26671702, 26689336 Fax.: 91-011-26687891, 26681888 First, is this an actual shop selling maps or just a warehouse/distribution/office for the company? If this is not a retail shop, can somebody recommend a shop in Delhi (or Shimla) which sells Nest & Wings maps (Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh). Thanks for any input Andy

Dont Know Nest & Wings, but ....
I dont know Nest & Wings, but Survey of India maps are available in Delhi. They are good maps for all needs and their office is on Janpath in an old dilapidated building. And their head office is in Dehradoon on Rajpur Road. I have used their road maps always.

Thanks Moon - Are the Survey of India maps up to date and accurate?
FYI - Nest and wings do many Indian travel maps, here is their website if you're interested. http://www.nestwings.com/booksmaps.html Do you know of any map shops in Delhi - or book shops that sell maps? Thanks Andy |

Have u already bought some maps? If not, please some more details of exactly what kind of maps u need. General, area/city-specific, trekking? Nest & Wings are publishers. That address is their office, they don't sell from there. N & W maps are generally available in all major book-shops. I can give u adds for Shimla as well (from their guides). They duplicate their publications in different forms though, so u need to be careful that you're not buying the same thing in a different form (e.g. u can buy "Uttaranchal" and also separately "Kumaon" and "Garhwal" which is no use, as the first incorporates the other two). SOI maps are not usually up-to-date but they can be easily worked with (a 1962 map of Mussoorie is still 90% accurate! ) |

Dilliwala - I'm actually cycling - I really need some maps that shows the back roads of Kinnaur/Spiti and the areas around Leh, such as Numbra valley and The Wari-la road to the Pangong Tso area. I have a day in Delhi and a day in Shimla to get some decent maps, if you could give me a an address in each city where I could buy these maps that will be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks Andy |

Nevertheless, they do have 2nd-best options: 1. "Shimla Hills" map in their Trekking Map Series covers most of Kinnaur district. It shows most but not all back-roads, and some pack-tracks/trek-paths. Price - 20 Rs. 2. In the same Series - "Route Map of J & K", sheets 1 and 2. This includes Ladakh. I don't know if u have to buy both or can buy only one. Price - 35 Rs. each. SOI have no useful maps covering Spiti. The above prices might have gone up a bit. Nest & Wings have the following publications/titles: 1. "Himachal Holiday Planner" - basically a detailed road-map of HP attached to a thin booklet giving some holiday info, point to point distances, etc. The map has some back-roads and pack-tracks marked, plus a few "trekking routes", whatever that means. U'll see what I mean when u see the map. Price - 60 Rs. 2. "Holiday Resorts of Himachal Pradesh" - same map as above and a much thicker guide-book giving tourist info and hotel lists - as many as they cud collect. This book incorporates 2 others with similar info on a smaller scale but having HP in the title. In other words, if u buy this one, u don't need similar sounding ones of N&W. Price - 200 Rs. The next lot might be more useful. I haven't seen them, so I hope they mean what they say in their titles and sub-titles. I have no idea what sort of maps are included: 3. "Trekking in Zanskar & Ladakh". Price - 220 Rs. 4. "Trekking Map of Zanskar & Ladakh". Probably incorporated in the above. Price - 75 Rs. 5. "A Ready Reckoner for Baspa, Kinnaur, Spiti and Lahaul Valleys". Price - 120 Rs. U wud have to compare the maps of SOI against N&W's and see which are more useful. U cud even buy both - I always acquire as many of HP and Uttaranchal as I can get my hands on. By experience I've learnt that I often have to consult and compare 2, 3 or even 4 different maps of an area to get the "complete" picture. E.g. in Dehradun district there are 3 different maps not showing a particular back road, but the a.m. DPM does, and it's a good road and short-cut as well. I'd like to suggest the foll, especially if u stay in Central Delhi (or even if not) - go to the SOI and buy the a.m. maps. Then go to nearby bookshops and compare the a.m. N&W titles and buy those that look useful, as in, have usable maps. Addresses 1. Survey of India Map Sales Office. A Barracks, Janpath (next to OLD Cottage Industries Emporium, behind the Tibetan Market shops). For N&W maps (Note: Place is the inner circle, Circus is the outer circle) - 2. Amrit Book Co. 21-N, Connaught Circus. Opposite Scindia House. 3. Book World. 7, Palika Bazar, Connaught Circus. 4. Book Worm. 29-B, Connaught Place. 5. Galgotia. 17-B, Connaught Pl. 6. Empire Book Depot. 74, Janpath Market. (Close to SOI) 7. Famous Book Store. 25, Janpath Bhavan. (Close to SOI) 8. Bookshop of the Hotel Imperial. Janpath. (Close to SOI) 9. Jain Book Agency. 9-C, Connaught Pl. 10. Karachi Stationery Mart. 46, Main Market, Janpath. (Close to SOI) 11. Rajiv Book House. 30, Palika Bazar, Connaught Circ. 12. Mehta Bandhu. 64, Janpath. (Close to SOI). That shud do u. |
