Hi,
what is the map availability in India? In particular, we are interested in detailed (in Indian terms) trekking maps (perhaps Ladakh and other Himalayin areas). The Rough Guide suggests it is rather difficult to get maps in India and advises to get them prior to the journey. This is quite difficult, esp. that our trip is long and we haven't decided exactly on the regions to visit. Is is really that bad? Or can one buy maps in India? Cheers, -N. |

Hi Norunka
Not sure about trekking maps, but there are some produced by West Col Productions and sold through Stanfords in London at £7.25 each: http://www.stanfords.co.uk/seriesdetails/mapseries?series_id=407&loc_id =3069&cat_id=576&seriescount=9 Omnimap.com also offer other, similar maps, but they're in the US: http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/int/india.htm In addition the recently published Eicher Road Atlas is worth considering. It covers the whole of the country (and a big chunk of Nepal) on 120 maps. Most are at 1:1 million, with the islands and Kashmir at 1:2 million. There are also a number of city maps included. I paid 370 Rs in Delhi in March. It appears to be available on the net. Good luck Mike |

The eicher road atlas is disapointingly small ie small page size.
If they had made the pages twice the size, coveringlarger area it would have been much better --- but the information is there. |

Availability IN INDIA
I know there are trekking maps I can get in map shops in the West... but can I can actually get them once in India? E.g. can I get them in Leh or perhaps Delhi?
Thanks for clarifying that, dzekyl |

don't know where you plan to trek/hike. But, do keep in mind that the chances you will encounter dangerous fauna is quite high in India. Also, resuce service range from limited to non-existent. Hence, very few (in comparative terms) people hike in India.

The Govt of India does not release border area maps as a rule. Of course, Google Earth is pushing aside many rules... |

There is a Survey of India map store on Jan Path in New Delhi. They sell a lot of maps including some of smaller areas (Rishikesh for example). Are any of their maps useful for hiking?
