Question Map availability in India

Hi,

what is the map availability in India? In particular, we are interested in detailed (in Indian terms) trekking maps (perhaps Ladakh and other Himalayin areas).

The Rough Guide suggests it is rather difficult to get maps in India and advises to get them prior to the journey. This is quite difficult, esp. that our trip is long and we haven't decided exactly on the regions to visit.

Is is really that bad? Or can one buy maps in India?

Cheers,
-N.

Hi Norunka

Not sure about trekking maps, but there are some produced by West Col Productions and sold through Stanfords in London at £7.25 each:
http://www.stanfords.co.uk/seriesdetails/mapseries?series_id=407&loc_id =3069&cat_id=576&seriescount=9

Omnimap.com also offer other, similar maps, but they're in the US:
http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/int/india.htm

In addition the recently published Eicher Road Atlas is worth considering. It covers the whole of the country (and a big chunk of Nepal) on 120 maps. Most are at 1:1 million, with the islands and Kashmir at 1:2 million. There are also a number of city maps included. I paid 370 Rs in Delhi in March. It appears to be available on the net.

Good luck
Mike

The eicher road atlas is disapointingly small ie small page size.

If they had made the pages twice the size, coveringlarger area it would have been much better --- but the information is there.

Availability IN INDIA

I know there are trekking maps I can get in map shops in the West... but can I can actually get them once in India? E.g. can I get them in Leh or perhaps Delhi?

Thanks for clarifying that,
dzekyl

don't know where you plan to trek/hike. But, do keep in mind that the chances you will encounter dangerous fauna is quite high in India. Also, resuce service range from limited to non-existent. Hence, very few (in comparative terms) people hike in India.

Maps available in Delhi or Leh will poor quality.

The Govt of India does not release border area maps as a rule.

Of course, Google Earth is pushing aside many rules...

There is a Survey of India map store on Jan Path in New Delhi. They sell a lot of maps including some of smaller areas (Rishikesh for example). Are any of their maps useful for hiking?

Survey of India maps

Seems it will be easier to purchase Survey of India maps...

Quote:
Way cleared for faster implementation of India's NSDI; 4,800 Survey of India maps to be released into public domain

New Delhi, India, 17 February 2007 - India's National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) mission promises to change the way citizens look at their world. At the core of this dream are plans to forge digital links and construct information highways that place data secreted in official vaults, and as diverse as street maps, forest areas, tax collection and hospitals, within the reach of a PC.

...Recently an important development has taken place in this context. The officials working on the GIS project at Technology Bhawan in New Delhi's Qutub Institutional Area received news that some 1,600 Survey of India topographical sheets awaiting defence clearance would now be available for use by the GIS team. Four hundred had been cleared, and by March-end all 4,800 SoI maps, many of them for the first time, would be available for the public domain.

"These maps are part of our 1:50,000 series. As many as 2,900 were part of the open series, but the rest were not meant for general viewing ever before. Now we can proceed with both—the 40 cities project as well as the 1:50000 series," said Major General M Gopal Rao, Surveyor General of India.

Map index: http://www.surveyofindia.gov.in:8080...ata/viewer.htm
Pricing of Open Series Maps: http://www.surveyofindia.gov.in/osm/osm.html

Nevertheless, 110,- INR for a map sheet as a PDF file sounds interesting!

Westerners should pay "indecent prices" at cartographic.com...

http://www.cartographic.com/xq/asp/i.../hub/index.asp

India 1:50K Topographic Maps of India:
http://www.cartographic.com/xq/asp/i.../hub/index.asp

But the most interesting maps are still Defence Series Map (DSM)!!!

Gives new experiences from Indians with Survey of India, especially with digitized PDF files? *without ulterior motives*
