Hi Hewlyn, There is no railway network to Manali as of now, the one which is still under construction so you cannot reach by rail. You need to take a Taxi or a Local bus. Advice: Pathankot > Road =NH-20 > Dharamshala > Mandi
From Mandi you can catch any bus going to Manali
Quote:
My advice is, why not do Dalhousie first. Its hardly 50 kms North from Pathankot and would not need to do a "U" Turn from Manali.

You have to take the train either from Jullundar or from Pathankot. I am not sure about the rail which would be running thru these cities, kindly check here [Indian Railways]If you need any advice for stay or something else kindly let us know
, enjoy your vacation.

There are direct buses from Joginder Nagar to Manali which you can take, alternatively you can skip Joginder Nagar and take direct bus from Pathankot to Manali.
There is a direct bus from Manali to Dalhousie which you can take and from Dalhousie you can take bus/taxi to Pathankot.
Cheapest option is the Himachal Transport buses which you will find at each of these places.

Don’t know the exact price, but it shouldn’t be more than couple of hundred rupees per person. Dalhousie - Manali should be around 300-400 rupees per person.
Taxi should be more comfortable, provided you are hiring something like Qualis. Major plus would be the option to stop anywhere you like, however it would be quite costlier than taking a bus.
What kind of budget are you looking at? Both cities have enough hotels which cater to all kind of budgets.

As for the bus, would not exceed couple of hundred per person that is if at all you get a direct bus. As for the train, there is no rail network to Manali area yet. The one which is under construction would only complete in 2011 not before that which would connect several valleys. MANALI
As for the cost of Hotels, I have tried several types of Hotels in last few years. The budget starts from Rs. 200 - 1500 per day. Depends on what kind of luxury you really want. If you need good pampering & hot jacuzee try Holiday Inn. [Just before you enter Manali] costs Rs. 1500 per day (Off season) & Rs. 4500 (season) - Its off season now so you can try that. Dont go with their website rates, just bargain

If you want to have a decent view hotel, try - Get away resort [Rs. 750] ... you would need to bargain your way in

Plenty of cheaper options are open as well which would not exceed Rs. 200
DALHOUSIE
There for plenty of options as good as manali but rather carm area, no hustle. Rs. 400 - 1200 per day rooms would be available throught
: Try Dalhousie Heights, I am big fan of the Chefs there, they make excelent continental food. This hotel would cost you approx 1500 per day but seriously amazing location and awesome view
Enjoy
Hi,
will suggest u cheaper options
1) u take a train from Delhi ( assuming u start from here )
to Pathankot / Chakki Bank. its an overnight journey
take a bus to Dalhousie ( 75 kms / 4hrs ) this is an uphill journey , make sure u carry tablets incase anyone throws up.
2) stay at Dalhousei for 3 days and take a private bus to Dharmashala . its a wonder ful place - do not miss it
3) u take a bus which starts at 7 pm to manali ( approx 500 rupees ) and you will be at manali next day.
manali u need to stay minimum 5 days.
from here u get volvo buses to delhi. do not take the luxury or state buses or u may get broken bones. distance is 450 kms / 16 hrs . a volvo is them most comfortable journey or likewise u may want to break this journey. u may go to chandigarh or shimla and tthen to delhi
