The GPSMAP 276C*RRP: AUD $1,659.00*Our Price: $1,329.00
GPSMAP76 AUD$561 (8MB), GPSMAP76S AUD$693 (24MB), GPSMAP 76CS AUD$970 (112MB), GPSMAP60C AUD$814, GOPSMAP60CS AUD$899

These smaller ones are handheld, size of a PDA with compass etc, the 276 is a monster for auto and marine not for walking the streets or co-piloting the taxi in India. They all use data cards for uploading maps and logically one can have extra data cards or move data between pc and card to change content etc. I am sure that one could get larger memory card up to 1GB if needed, if it is built in memory this may be expensive but if it is expandible then could be very viable with Kingston Memory.

All this sounds expensive but a 20GB iPod in India is AUD$899. double what we pay here, maybe there will be some softare to put the maps on the iPod, now there's a thought after all the iPod is evolving quickly.

MapCue CD update

Got my Chennai CD a couple of days ago. There is quite a lot of detail there, including streets that are not shown/named in the Eicher book.

Ititial reaction is that it is certainly worth the money.

By the time that I get to India I think the detail will be quite good as you found Nick-H on your CD. The excellent thing about it that once you have it then you are almost localised as it doesn't take long to get familiar with a place with a decent map.

I think the last guy in Delhi that was talking to me about his GPS products was over the top price wise for his maps and trying to make a buck before the good ones come out.

I have just got my Palm TE and need to now get GPSy the Mac GPS program, then I am ready to use it on the PowerBook or Palm via any GPS link that I get. I would prefer the GPSMAP76 as it has a few extras such as an altimeter but will have to wait until the house sells before I can do anything else.

I feel like I am at an airport in the departure lounge waiting for a flight which has been severely delayed. Our bags have been packed (really) since July when we had a contract on our house fall over.

Oh yes! Map = Freedom

With my Eicher Chennai City Map book I was able to set out on foot, explore, and even direct auto drivers.

I still own a house too (well, I've only made a feeble effort to sell it so far). I wasn't really planning to sell until next summer, and the bank balance is diminishing fast, so expensive GPS toys will have to wait.

Just rememebred a friend is going to US this week! I'll check trhe prices to see if I'd save much: he did offer to get me some shopping next time he went.

GPS map of Delhi

There is a GPS map and software for pocketPC and PC available with mapking version 7, for DElhi. It is available only for Delhi available at http://www.mapking.com/shopping/en/ . I am using it. It does not have the routing etc that you can get in US and European gps products.

I’ve been driving around south India using GPS navigation for a few years.
I use an old laptop connected to an old Garmin handheld receiver. This will work on the dashboard of a car, but needs an external antennae in a vehicle with a vertical windscreen, like a van or truck.
The laptop has the advantage of a huge screen, massive memory and processor. Contrary to common belief, the hard drive has had no trouble with vibration from the road or diesel engine.
The downside of course, is that it’s hard to mount.
I use several programs, but for India it’s exclusively ozi explorer [ www.oziexplorer.com ]. This program has the ability to import a huge variety of map formats, but I found no digital maps of India at all when I started. I scanned a set of Nelles maps, reassembled them in photoshop, and calibrated them in oziexplorer using data from delorm global explorer.
Now of course, we have Google maps and Earth, which is beautifully accurate. Apparently if you pay you can download larger images [even use it directly with your GPS if you could get a mobile internet connection, which you can’t]. I download the free screen size images and reassemble them for high definition maps, but it’s a lot of work. I’ve used this system to validate [invalidate actually] claimed property boarders, it’s accurate to within meters.
I have a scanned calibrated map of Goa, and the India maps if anyone wants them. The file sizes are large though, due to the huge high definition Jpeg scans. They would probably have to be emailed in multiple parts. These will work in Oziexplorer and perhaps a couple of similar programs.
I have tried to buy calibrated map sets of Indian cities, but had no luck finding anything I was willing to pay for. If anyone has good city data to share, please send me a pm.
I don’t know if I’ll be traveling through India again though [anyone want to buy a big custom built camper?].

I encountered someone who uses I think the first system and loves it. And they have Hyderabad! Not sure if they have the little dirt road nalla to my area and a warning about dodging the mother dog and pups. Next trip to India for sure..
