Detailed maps

Does anyone know where/how I could get hold of detailed Indian maps? Although mapsofindia.com is helpful, I'm looking for larger scale maps which show small settlements like villages.

Nelles puts out a series of maps for India that are quite good -- detail like a good road map. I haven't seen them available in India, but they were available in a travel book/map store in Vancouver that I dropped by last week -- perhaps you could check out the travel section of a good bookstore where you live (perhaps they could order the one's you would require even if they don't stock them).

Check out a bookstore with a really good travel section. I am not sure just how much detail you want but the LP Travel Atlas is pretty detailed(it does have villages in it) and comes in book form so the maps don't get torn.

I've tried looking in India and the selection has seemed pretty poor. Those that are available are printed on very thin paper. If you're planning on using a map a lot, the local ones won't last more than a week.

There is an excellent series of detailed maps of Indian states published by Bharat. I just purchased the Bharat map for Rajasthan and am very happy with it.

If you need one in advance they can be purchased (at a MAJOR markup) from a Canadian supplier at www.maptown.com. In India I believe the cost is about 90 rupees.

it has detailed maps of every district of india, also has maps of tourist circuits and rail routes..

I AM WITH YOU ANNIE T---I LOOKED THRU LONELY PLANET INDIA ATLAS AND AS WELL AS MAPS IT HAS A FEW PAGES DETAILING MAJOR RAIL ROUTES--ANY ONE IN
INDIA CURRENTLY USING ONE MIGHT GIVE AN INFORMED

the british have done quite some detailed work during their colonial stay in India (Survey of India). but to get access to these maps you need a university where lectures of Indology are given.

The best of maps India I have seen & used are the US Army Map Service 1: 2500 00 Series. I bought some of these from Library of Congress last century.Small sample below. An index of downloadable maps in this series you will find at :

These are the best terrain maps I have seen , but the survey work is really dated. You will find a lot more roads, villages etc.
I made some efforts in my last stay in Ladakh to find more updated local maps , including talking to angrezis with many years of experience. It is not to be found. On the "trekking" maps that are sold (often with no altitude curves or mountain ridges marked) I even found that villages that were actually outside but close to restricted areas were omitted : you are not supposed to get that close.

These conditions is obviously a result of past & looming wars (Pakistan & China).I have no idea of the availability of maps in less sensitive regions.

Thanx Ian , the Stanford site was just what I needed. The Loeman ridge-line maps seems like a good way to update the AMS maps (which they also sell).
I noticed on one of the downloaded maps that the Manali-Leh road was unmarked (obviously) , but also two trails : Manali-Leh and the "Hindustani-Lhasa" trail (the old caravan route between Leh & Lhasa). Now that would be a trek ...

I`ll put up more easily read index to the map download page once I get my homepage organised.
