detailed maps and gps data

hello everybody,
I know that there already have been some threads about detailed maps of india.
I still don't know which maps are best for gps navigation purposes.
Does anyone know which maps contain grid lines with longitude and latitude information and where coordinate system and map projection are given? I would like to scan and calibrate them to get waypoints.

An alternative could be digital maps. Are there any?

Are there any collections of accurate gps waypoints online?

Please help me!
Christian

GPS Maps of India

I have used GPS in India, but the only map I had that showed India was Microsoft Autoroute™.

The GPS data shows you longitude and latitude, and your height above sea level, but because of the scale of the map, you only have a rough idea of your location.

If anyone knows of any other maps, I would like to hear – especially if they are of South India.

You might find something useful at the GPS/trainspotting site.

I know that Stan Armington (still going strong.. ) was said to be involved in a Nepal trekking guide, that also gave waypoints ( which insures some entertainment for the locals , looking at angrezis hunched over their instruments.. )

Thanks a lot.
The main purpose is going by bike overland. Because of that I would be interested in regional road maps, not only city maps.

Does anyone know the maps of Bharat Graphics or TTK?

Thank you, I already read the thread concerning the Bharat maps. But it has not been told if they contain grid lines and calibation information. This would be the most important thing to know about them...

Please, if anyone owns one of those maps, just have a look on it and tell me, if there are longitudes and latitudes on it.

Thank you very much,
Christian

Don't know about Bharat Maps, but searching for it I learnt about several GPS devices by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) that may be relevant...

From the last link:

"The GPS product range of Bharat Electronics includes an indigenously developed 12-channel receiver; vehicle position and status monitoring systems, including emergency voice communication and a GIS `engine' in the `open' operating system Linux, which enables real time display of information on hand held computers and laptops."

Hello again,
thank you very much for your answers.

I just got an information about the mightygps digital maps. They seem to be based on US military maps, which use to be dated.

I still don't know if the Bharat maps contain longitudes and latitudes...

I will try it with the Bharat maps

Hello again,

I just got the information that the Bharat maps have longitudes and latitudes. I will just order some and find out, if they can be calibrated. I will tell you about the results!

But, of course, any other suggestions are still welcome!
