Amazing Map
If you zoom onto India, you can drag the mouse from point A to B and it shows you the distance between the towns and cities. I pinpointed to a very small town to the next, and it was accurate. What do you guys think?

On the basis of a quick look, so I might have missed stuff, I think I prefer a combination of Google Earth and Wikimapia.

When I first went to India, I went to a lot of small towns that my dad's business mates, and was geographically lost. So knowing distances and stuff like that helped me alot. It's basic, but handy.

Google Earth is much easier to use and so much more informative.

Never used Google Earth.
I will now though. My brother swears on the thing, but that's 'cause he is a computer person, so everything seems amazing to him. |

The reason I use both Google Earth and Wikimapia is that Wikimapia has more information. A lot of it is complete garbage, but as well as the seven billion places marked 'my house', it's amazing how many villages, suburbs, landmarks, even streets have had their names contributed.
Google earth has higher resolution. The Wikimapia information can be overlaid on Google Earth. Best of both worlds! But I think wikimapia is still better for searching, once outside USA, Europe, etc, where all that is needed in Google Earth is a postcode to zoom in on someone's house. You can start by trying: www.wikimapia.com . No downloads needed, its web-based. But I predict you'll get addicted and download Google Earth pretty soon . I don't go there often, but when I do I can be there for hours! |

Haha. Too late, I'm already zooming on Connaught Place, Marine Drive, Sydney Harbour, Varanasi! But I'll check out Wikimapia now. I stumbled onto it a few weeks back but never paid attention to it. With Google earth though, I thought you could zoom right onto cars and that kind of stuff. Oh well, I'm not too disappointed.
Now, I totally forgot what I was supposed to do. Damn you, Google Earth. ![]() |
