Womens Experience in India from a male point of view

I remember hearing from an Italian woman once that she found it really wierd that, in London, men did not stare at women.

Cultural norms, eh? It's an assorted world!

its weird...its a weird transition thing i think like shekar said. I believe that 200 years ago, u wudnt have got this kind of thing from Indian males. I also believe that Indian women were also treated with more respect (although they did have substantially less freedom too) in the earlier ages than today's society. I sincerely hope that this situation changes for the better, sooner than later.

For Auntyji and Yogagal: I never wore anything but very very demure salwar-kameez with the dupatta draped 'properly' (when I was not wearing a sari) and I was propositioned exactly the way Yogagal describes, in a "nice" jewelery store in Chennai on TTK Road Alwarpet, by a Kashmiri merchant. I made some polite change of subject and went to attend to my girlfriend who was shopping elsewhere in the store. It was amazing, he had been showing me jewelery for 4 minutes and then this come-on. That doesn't even work in the West, dude!

Yes, it helps tremendously to wear traditional clothing, and I advise everyone to do so, but still, s*** happens at times, particularly to my blonde acquaintances who are really high profile.

I've been harassed very very little in 3 years, if at all, but I put it down to a combo of dress code, luck, and "Don't f*** with me" New Yorker vibes that I honed in Manhattan for 9 years. (as my father said, "Harassment? God help the Indian man who tries to harass you!")

If I want extra camouflage, I pull my dupatta over my head, and/or wear glasses. Glasses seem to be a real turnoff here.

any verbal propositioned I think I can handle or ignore, what gets me is when some guys walk past, give you that look and sing something..... and you can't say anything, as they just reply "what, I was just singing"....

We get alot of that in our local asian high street, it just creeps me out...
