traveling with 2 small dogs
Wife and I plan
extended stay in india, perhaps multipule entries, etc. What problems might arise traveling with two 5 lb. dogs. Not about vets, but how indians might react, hotels, cabs, restaurants, to dogs as pocket companions. Feedback esp. anecdotes appreciated. thanks |

Mod note.
Hi. Have moved your thread as there are a few more "travelling with...." type questions here - so maybe a better chance of getting an answer. Thanks. |

Its not something routine in India..... cabs will not have a problem (as long as they dont bite the driver
) but i am not too sure of how hotels and restaurants are going to react to be quite frank... in all my years here i am yet to see this sight.....in a proper sit down place that is.........be prepared for a lot of staring , i would probably be looking over a few times if i was on the table next you!! Out of curiosity why would you be wanting to travel with them to begin with? There's no alternative solution/option? |

Paintbusters - you may find some hotels don't allow them, some will. I very much doubt if inside restaurants will be allowed.
Travelling 1A or 2or3 Tier A/C by train I have never seen dogs inside or other animals for that matter. May be not permissible on these classes? And I have never seen dogs on buses either. If you had your own vehicle I guess no problem! I think like puchoo they may be a problem for much travelling about - but if you intend staying for quite a while in one area then no problem. It is very rare to see Indians out and about with pet dogs...

Are you looking at being stationed in one place or moving around quite a lot? As Aishah mentioned if one place then your problems are reduce greatly, if you are going to be moving around then maybe you could consider putting them in a boarding house for a while.
Other than hotels you will rarely see a "No Pets allowed" sign, the problem is that it will be along the lines of a culture shock to most restaurants...they dont let the "holy cow" in , i doubt that they will let an 'un-holy' dog inside.... but again i am talking about proper sit down places which would also cover fast food joints such as Mcdonalds etc not dhabas , open cafe's and so on. |

A specialized area and there have been posters here (2 including jeanneleez) who do this. Few medium and low end places advertize that they accept pets. Some sites:
http://www.whenwetravel.com/travel_d...dly_hotels.jsp http://www.puppylove.in/columns.html Most of the places that advertize in India are high end. I imagine that in that wonderful Indian way you can negotiate on the spot in lesser establishments. I don't think they are allowed on trains unless in the baggage compartment. But, you can rent a car and driver easily and call the shots.. |

There are a couple of threads here about train travel with dogs; you have to book an entire First-class-AC compartment, when you can take your dog with you, or accommodation for [I think only one] dog is available in the baggage compartment. First come, first served; if its already taken you must miss the train.
Not all drivers will accept the job of taking the dogs in their car: they may be worried about their cars being fouled, and may not be prepared to accept that this won't happen. |
