Hoo hah, residue, Klingons!
Beam me up Scottie! In early 1987 I visited Rajasthan. Right after the train left the station in Jodhpur I had to go to the loo. Right as I was getting out my roll of toilet paper the train shook and I lost my grip. The roll disappeared down the hole and I was left holding four sheets of TP. The water was running so I resorted to plan B. Fortunately it was my TP that was lost in the loo and NOT my passport/wallet! |

Wow! Is that toilet as clean on the inside as it looks on the outside?

Reading this, and other threads prior to my first ever India visit helped me prepare for the experience!
What DID surprise me........ We were on an overnight train trip from Delhi to Pathankot, and at about 3AM or so I had to go. There was both a western and Indian option, and at 3AM, I chose the western option. As I was sitting there, still half asleep, the train whistle blew. Well! The sound and the vibration seemed to travel up from the bottom of the toilet and give me a wake-up smack you-know-where!!! (Later, I realized that the toilet lets out directly to the train tracks, but at night I hadn't realized this). I gave a surprised yelp, and then started laughing so hard that I couldn't get up. What an experience! |

as a reverse experience, the very first time i saw one of those toilets in U.S I thought it was malfunctioning, with water level considerably higher than what you have in Indian Western Toilets (!) . Just couldnt bring myself to use it..
found out later that that it is called washdown type or something.. yeah, almost.. |

On a wing and a prayer ...
We have the Tsunami toilets here in Canada too. We all put a life preserver on with a rope anchored to the nearest sink .... or at the very least remove our shoes before flicking the magic switch

If you're concerned about "how to go to the loo", then do what I did...hold it all in for 5 weeks.

Thanks for the graphic and very funny information on using the "loo". ( I was laughing so hard, friends at work wondered if I was crying. I can not wait for my first experence in June. Meanwhile I will practice squatting, holding my clothes up with my chin and washing with my left hand. |

Keep your legs crossed tightly. If you let up, you'll explode and ruin your trip.

Each time I leave India or even go to one of those 5 istar hotels in India, I hate using toilet paper with no water
. Its soo yucky to just wipe it off with paper where as much 'cleaner' dirts in hand needs soaping and scrubbing !!!When outside of India, I normally get a bunch of toilet paper soaked in water and then get to do the business. Use normal dry ones for first round of cleaning, and use the wet ones to wind up the cleaning process. Not as good as water, but still feels a lot better than using dry paper! ![]()
