Access to toilets? Indeed, one usually uses the door!

There are places like hotels, restaurants, even hospitals where one can pretty much rely on there being a toilet. Just walk in, looking as if you are staying or eating there, and look for it.

Anyway, (unless you walk into a five-star looking like a filthy tramp!) India does not have the same "toilets for customers only" inhospitably one gets used to in, for instance, London ---where I have a very practised "looking for my friends" method of looking for pub toilets!.

Big shops and, of course Malls, are a fair bet too.

This might work in cities -- how about if you are in towns?

I guess my question is do you consciously have to plan your day or can one typically find a facility when the need arises?

Though if you guys are talking about footprints on normal seats with thin rims,
Yes, I was talking about regular ole Western toilets not hybrid (seen those too) where in some cases people had clearly left shoe prints on the seat. And in one case on the narrow porcelain rim below the seat!
doIhavetoReally - access is so-so because even in fast food places, there will often be just one stall each for men/women. But hey that's better than nothing!

I remember being a little shocked when I first saw a squat toilet..but I do remember arriving at a guest house in Delhi once and a guy from Texas came down not looking very happy, and sternly asked the guest house manager "You expect me to shit in a hole!"....not sure what this guy expected of India but a short while later I heard him talking to a local Indian chai guy who had a basic little contraption for brewing up chai...he went over and said "so, you got any decaf"?

I never had a problem using my hand...I think the best thing to do is just go for it, after a couple of times it will start to lose it's grossness. It's not like you as scooping it out by the handful!

my policy was to use a toilet if i saw one as you could never really be sure when there would be another.

I also use this rule. Same with shopping: buy it when you see the right one because you may never get another chance!

Not a Problem

I really didn't have a problem. In the cities western toilets are plentiful. In rural India bushes are plentiful
