We'll be in India in September, and I want to say that Indiamike has been so helpful in setting my mind at ease. In the essay Beach says that no amount of study can prepare you for the first exposure. Isn't that exciting! I've been studying things from all angles, I can say simple things in Hindi, I can even read Devanagari script even if I can't understand it, eat nimbly with my fingers, wear slacks in the heat, hand things over with my right hand, and, oh yeah, do the squat toilet gymnastics (whoo-hoo!). I'm having a blast! And I have a fantastic partner to do this with. We can't wait to get there and experience the full force of that first exposure. It's an innitiation that all of you experienced posters understand - and I can tell it in the way you write - and I can't wait until I'm not an Indian virgin (words someone used somewhere here). I expect when it's done we'll be able to put all our "training" into prespective and smile about it being a bit much.

Thanks all, I was born there but never been back and won't be for another couple of weeks, but the more I read of your valuable contributions that much more it seems to come to life.
Btw, I know that reading till the cows leave home isn't going to prepare the newbie for arrival, but should we book our hotel in advance or will it be ok to fumble along from Calcutta airport? Or doesn't it matter because nothing'll work out anyway? keda |

Some of the posts here make me add another dimension to the one month trip of N. India I'm planning for Oct-Nov.
The person who will be accompanying me has just returned from one year of extensive travelling in China, and has relatives in 2? 3? SE Asian countries, but is new to India. I'm practically new as well (1 month Mussoorie, 1 week Delhi in 2003), but I have seen much of most western European countries. I certainly look forward to comparing experiences. |

Wow!
Mind you, I think the same could be said for a lot of Beech's threads and posts. ![]() Given that you feel so strongly about it... |

Thanks
.. I guess, long back i discussed with cyberhippie about some other posts of beach.. but the argument against that was that those posts were ruined in the end due to some arguments leading to flames. This post along with the "a suitable boy" post by volga were (I think they still are..) the contender for the best thread in IndiaMike.. IMHO ![]() |

Thank you Phantom & Nick for the compliments!!
In a couple of days, to be precise the coming Sunday, ‘The India Confusion’ is celebrating its 3rd anniversary. I posted it here on 14 Jan 2004 ![]() To set the record right, this thread was not sticky in the initial days, then it was made sticky on 'popular demand', and may be after a year or so the glue lost its adhesion, and now again hooked back to the roof. I think the culprit is the very theme of the article.....confusion ![]() |
