Proxyindian, the biggest problems seem to have been the touts and the beggars.

The only way to minimise them is to get off the main tourist map and go to less frequented places, I am afraid. Even an Indian tourist gets overwhelmed by these types in major tourist locations, which is why this Indian tourist tries to avoid them.

Scams... I have been scammed in various places, and knifed in one or two... Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Columbia, Germany and Thailand included. Dare I say the scams in India are gentler?

I am not trying to downplay your experience. I think what I am saying is, that as visitors, we have to take the country as it is, warts and all.

And sometimes the warts are such that you don't want to visit again. Thats all right, too.

If you ever return to India, try some places outside the 'circuit'. You may be surprised.

Most of them don't happen to me either, most of the time.

But there are times, when I want an auto from near a big hotel and the guy quotes Rs100 .

The 'attention' one gets in shops is just the way it works here. I used to get really annoyed to have two young girls following me around every time I went to a kitchen shop. But it is their job: everywhere you will get your personal shopping assistant. Fabric shops: either enjoy that cascade of colours, or persuade them that you can pick what you want to look at from the shelf -- it can be done!

Come South... I was always told it was a gentler introduction to India. We have all those same ingredients, but perhaps a less strong mix.

Well whatever proxy describes is nothing but the truth about India, and it only describes one of the issues - the people. But on the other hand I'm sure he agrees that it is a maturing experience not to be missed, a test of patience and tolerance; you somehow have to reinvent your sense of humor in order to deal with these situations, and it can seem very tough or at times impossible. Retreating to a quiet comfort place can help recharge your batteries, otherwise India can wear you down quite easily.

I think he will come back, provided the chance, and give it another shot It's like a bitter, but very healthy pill

Hell, sometimes when I return to India, it takes me a week to get used to it, and I was born here.
